Interesting read. Just this morning put an old VF900 Fatality on my 4850 after selling my X1900XT with my S1 on it. It now runs silently and cool.

43oc idle, 27oc off previous idle temp.
65oc load, 20oc off previous load temp.

Honestly thought it would have been cooler with the stock cooler in my 900, never the less temps are sorted so I'm happy :)

Pretty certain the cooling solution letting the card get too hot is intentional, to maintain a better gap between the 4850 and the 4870. i.e. it limits overclocking potential so it can never reach 4870 levels.

Very nice.

Am pretty sure I have a VF700 and a VF900 lying round somewhere. Will maybe look to put one of them on and see how they fare. Also planning to pickup a 4870 toward the weekend if the availability is ok.

Hmm, I have a VF900 lying around, might try attaching it to the 4850. Got 10 vram self-stick heatsinks too so they'll do nicely :) I'm very suprised the VF900 actually fits.

Hmmm... checked the obvious stuff, like installing as Admin etc?
It's definately working fine with Vista64 - I took a couple of screenies before I came back to work, will post them later.

Have you removed any old installs? Also try to manually delete any of the dlls that are leftover and retry the install. Soz, prob teaching you to suck eggs, but you never know.

yes I edited some values with a hex editor and flashed to 740mhz core, but shows up as 700mhz in windows :( It looks like there's some sort of bios lock on these cards so I guess we'll have to wait until some OC versions come out so we can steal their bioses.

I even figured out a working pencil mod and my waterblock arrived today so I'm all ready to get clocking.

I hate being patient.

So was I to be honest, I got this before my S1 but it didn't work too well on the X1900XT so I got the S1. Then I remembered reading that it takes the same coolers as the 3850/70 and then confirmed that the S1 also fit them so I thought in theory the VF900 should work fine, and it did! doing an amazing job. might have to look into some more ram sinks for the ram, got 6 of the ram sinks on the PWM.

FOUND THIS

if you make a profile in catalyst after turning on Overdrive( make sure clock and memory settings are correct). You can then go to the file "C:\Users\Bretware\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\Bretware. XML. the xml file will have the same name as the catalyst profile you saved. right click and hit edit.

<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Manual" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="65" />

Change the value to "manual" and Want value to "65"

Save the file then reload your profile in catalyst.

65% seemed perfect for me, 70% was loud but you may need it if your case has poor air flow.

You will have to select the profile everytime you start the computer, but it will work until there is a fix or better info so i can figure how to change the auto target temp.
Good Luck ,bretware

I can confirm this works! I stuck it to 50% and my idle has dropped to 55C (possibly still dropping) from 73C. My xml file was saved in application data (I did a search), I've also added a short cut to the desktop, so I can add that into my start up menu Jobs a gooden :) Fan is ever so slightly audible, but not aggressive, have a play around until you find your max acceptable sound, and remember, anything over 20 is going to be better! This needs to get spread around really, it's ever so simple to do! Remember to open the xml file in notepad!

Will rthdribl it to see the max!

76C Max, which was my old idle :p I'm pretty confident that this is the best fix we will have till RivaTuner updates itself.
