I have just switched to using IMAP on Outlook from POP3.

For anyone that does this with their gmail account, do you not find that general usage of outlook is a lot slower (i take it because it has to sync everything with gmail)....or have i not set up imap right in outlook or on my gmail settings?

Thanks.

Yeah there's a slight lag changing folders or deleting mail, but apart from that it was fine. And new mail arrived instantly.

I ended up switching back to POP3 though because I don't really need to be connected 24/7. Checking every 10 minutes for new mail is more than enough.

Sorry new to this and IMAP especially. Always used POP or webmail (Yahoo). Is there a way to keep messages stored on the webserver under POP or is that what IMAP is for?

If you're using Gmail you can set the options to archive the message when you download it through POP. Not sure about other services but I'm sure they have a similar setup.

IMAP is basically a sync between the server and Outlook (or other program/device) so they both have the exact same content. And are always connected.

I do, but it keeps coming back and asking

There maybe periods of 4-5hrs before it asks again, or it might be days.

I setup a gmail account and wanted to use POP with Outlook and the same thing would happen, everything setup as per the website instruction section and it would STILL keep asking me for my password in this annoying popup box!!

I ended up switching to IMAP (which is slower) and using Mozilla Thunderbird instead.....

Drove me up the wall and I couldn't figure out why it kept doing it, so if someone figures it out or knows a fix OR that its a known issue please speak up :)

Can anyone explain to why in Thunderbird when you reply to a mail the cursor is at the bottom of the mail and not the top??

I have to scroll to the top every time before I can start writing my mail out

EDIT: Ah found it under tools - account settings - composition & addressing :D
