*** Official 4870 reviews thread ***

Plus I think it's much better to have the option of 4870 crossfire later down the line considering how it's is eye-wateringly quick. I would feel limited by Crossfire 4950... in fact i don't see the point of crossfiring two powerful 512MB cards, only 1GB+ would give you some element of future-proofing imo.

^ +1

I'm on a P35 MB so CF not 8x/8x so if I were to change GPU today it'd prob be a single card hence a 4870, if that were 2-3 months from now it'd prob be the 4870X2 is what I'd guess, otherwise I'd have the option arround xmas to maybe get a cheaper CF MB that does CF well and get a 2nd 4870 which would be even cheaper by then, mindst am interested in performance and price of a 1Gb 4870 too...................so many options lol

o well...dont like the idea of going from 768Mb GTX to the 512mb 4870....but looks like a bit opf a performance booster at 1900 res...so if its no more than £200 ish...then its BUY, BUY BUY!!

On the face of it thats what I thought but the memory bandwidth is higher than on the GTX and also the Ultra, and thats on stock memory clock of 3600 effective, I'm sure the review posted yesterday had it o/c to 4400 !

Can only think this will hurt NVidia, not only on the pricey GTX cards, but also the 9800GTX+ which they are brining out to compete with the 4850, as well as their motherboard sales - now that AMD/ATI is such a strong competitor again, people will more readily go for an Intel chipset (better) for crossfire than the Nvidia boards for SLI.

Think Nvidia better give some room for SLI to be used on Intel chipsets.

The crossfire scaling isnt very impressive, i was going to buy 2 x 4870's today and a new mobo but i might just get the one.

I think it's genuinely sad that nVidia-chipset based boards are so poor (generally). If nV open up SLi on Intel Mobo's it will do 2 things;

1 - Completely destroy nVidia's discrete chipset business (although I can see their gfx-incorporated ones doing ok)

2 - Sell a LOAD more gfx cards :D

Personally I'd just concentrate all efforts on gfx and dump all other non-core business, reap the benefits in other ways

I think it is. Plus for the same price as the GTX 280 you get to beat it in performance in the majority of titles used in the benchmarks :). I think a lot of other titles will show the same.

i agree jedifragger, lets hope the X58 nehalm chipset adds Sli support. Only rich people would need the sli though as the only good cards to get in sli would be the GTX280, the other cards are beaten by the ATI 4800 series in crossfire. If nvidia dont add this then nvidia wont sell many of its own boards and their gpu sales will reduce a lot.

Ati really has brought out an amazing series, great prices AND performance which ati havent done for many years really except for the 2900 Pro that was briefly a steal for about 1 month until the next gen were out hehe.

thought these babies were coming out today got my money waiting to buy one,i know crysis is still not fantastic but cant stand the game anyway so goodbye gtx and come on you 4870

The hothardware review makes Nvidia still look good.

Generally it seems the 4870 isnt that much faster than the 4850, im thinking overclocking some 4850's may be the way to go.
I guess it all depends if a game can benefit from the extra memory bandwith a 4870 has vs a 4850

Impressed but I won't be getting one since my car (broken spring) has just eaten half the money I was going to buy it with. Also not sure I really need one, only game my GT strugles with is Crysis and I'm not desperate to play that again, plus the 4870 consumes quite a lot more power (47W idle / 78W load more than GT).

Nice to see ATI back in the game though.

some games are carp though

Crysis 25%

Quake wars 7%

Assasins creed 19%

oblivion and bioshock are good though.

Crysis... people should no better by now what to expect. runs like crap on single runs like crap on double
Quake wars same again crap on single crap on double.

Assasins C had the performance removed for ATI cards.

And you notice that SLI scales bad in the same games.

IMO the better games on that list are also the ones that scale better.

I really dont know what to do, maybe you guys can make my mind up for me, the GTX280 is still by 15% the fastest single card on the market (and will come down in price). If I go with the 4780 I will deffantly get 2 and CF them, should I wait for the 1GB versions or isnt there going to be any difference in performance and buy a couple of 512mb now?

Do CF 4780's really blow the GTX280 out the water?

Crysis doesn't run well on anything, assassins's creed runs very well already (can max it 1920*1200 on my 8800GT already), can't speak for quake wars.

Very impressed by the scaling in CoD4, bioshock etc, let's hope they can carry on with that in some upcoming titles (warhead, alan wake etc!) :D

To take a leaf out of Def's book, gogo ATi! :D
