My Gfx card just died...

So my gfx card just died, started getting errors in the bios screens, failed to make it to its normal 1600x1200 res...

Tried the monitor on a different machine - fine.
Tried using an old gfx card - fine.

So im looking to replace this dead card (nvidia 6800). But there is a 'problem', its AGP :)
I really can't replace this machine right now, so i'm looking for an AGP replacement.
I'm going to guess there isn't much choice now - I see OC has just 2 nvidia AGP cards.

Is there a best 'last of the agp' cards ?

Any help appreciated :)

Thanks.

The HD3850 is, and probably will stay, as the most powerful AGP card you can buy. Not cheap for what it is though. (Still cheaper than upgrading the rest of the system to PCI-E though!)

Thanks for the comments guys :)

I've normally stayed with nvidia cards due to their drivers always seeming better (more stable, less issues)

So now im wondering if the difference between the:

OcUK GeForce 7300 GT 512MB DDR2 HDTV/DVI (AGP)
&
HIS ATI Radeon HD 3850 Pro Turbo 512MB GDDR3

...will be big enough to justify the (admittedly small) difference in price.

Couple of other points that occured -
Will either of those cards need substantially more power than my old 6800 ? (the rest of the machine is a athlon64 3500, 1Gig ram, its pretty old..)

With the rest of the machine being so old, would it really do the HD3850 justice anyhow ?

Strange, my 6800 died 2 days ago too. Its a conspiracy i tell yee.

:D

Thanks.

Well the 3850 is much better than a 7300GT. Well your CPU might hold the 3850 a bit back but you could try overclocking your CPU to get some performance for free.
Make sure your PSU will be up to the task of powering your new card and have the required connectors to provide power to the card.

The 3850 would spank the 7300 silly. The 7300 is more the kind of card you'd stick in your PC just to keep it running while you waited for a new card to turn up, the 3850 is something you would game with. It is three times the price though.

Edit: If you are worried about your system bottle necking the 3850 maybe look around for a cheap X1950 and spend the saving on another gig of ram.

Thanks again guys.

If i can get away with it, I don't really want to start upgrading other areas of the machine really. Feels like spending money on an old machine that I could save to use on a new machine :(

I'm guessing the same would be true of a 7600 GS Vs. 3850 ?

(btw, how would they compare with my old 6800 ?)

I can't imagine this machine has a PS powerful enough for a high-end 3850...

Thanks.

The AGP cards in the nVidia section suck for games i'm afraid. If you want a new gaming AGP card you'll probably have to go ATi, or hunt around on the internet for somewhere with stock.

The 3850 Pro is the top of the bunch, and would be quite a bit faster than your 6800. I also believe the 3650 packs a reasonable punch. I think you'd be best off with one of those.

Other option is to go second hand - you have enough posts and time on the forums so activate your trust and start rummaging in the members market.

I *might* have an AGP X800 coming up for sale soon, keep an eye out for it! ;)

I doubt he wants to go back to P.S 2.0 gaming (X800/850), some games will not even let you run unless its P.S 3.0.

He best but one of the newer ATI cards new or 2nd hand.

Yeah :)

I play CS:S sometimes (1600x1200 with almost everything turned down), and recently TF2 a fair bit (1280x1024 with medium settings - no aa af) on my old 6800.

Initially i was looking at taking this chance to upgrade my gfx card, but due to the need to upgrade other bits (PS, more memory, etc..) / limited choice - It looks like i may even be struggling to get a card to replicate the performance of my old 6800 ?

A 7600 GS 256MB would be crappy as well ?

Thanks.

I think a 7600 GS would be an upgrade from a 6800 (vanilla I'm assuming?). Anything from an X1650 XT/7600 GT upwards should be a pretty good upgrade from it.

Oh, by the way the 3850 is significantly better than the 6 and 73/600 series, I'm talking more in terms of multiples.

An X800Pro VIVO (with the pipes unlocked) would be about the same speed as a 6800 Ultra if i'm not mistaken? ;)

It was a 6800 vanilla, yup. 128MB apparently... quite impressive considering the games I was playing :D

7600GT ? I've been struggling to find an AGP 7600 GT, only the GS 256MB...

Thanks again.

With lack of P.S 3,0 which came in 2004, this being 2008 not much good to him if the game will refuse to run.

Sell it on E-Gay to some n00b so you do not get comeback like on here. ;)
