GTX260 VS HD 4870

i would love to switch to ATI and get a 4870 or 4870x2 in a few months

but their driver control panal sucks so bad and lacks a lot of options compared to the nvidia cp :(

is there an ATI equilent to nhancer?
can i create custom resolutions with the ATI cp?

If the 260 can compete in price with the 4870, I will get the 260 and overclock the life out of it. An overclocked 260 is just 3-5% slower than a stock 280 according to firingsquad.

It's a rare thing to see a "what card?" thread with the answers being almost unanimously for one manufacturer.

This does indeed seem to be ATI's round.

Did you miss the whole 8000 series? ;)

Don't discount Nvidia just yet. They clearly missed their clocks this time around, but they still have the 55nm card to play. They also have the benefit of been the main player in the graphics sector, where they can over price and still outsell ATI, just like Intel when AMD had the much better CPU's.

They only have lost of Value for Money, they still have the Crown for fastest single card to whom that matters.

I feel over the week/months Nvidia will drop the price that much some on here will eat their words and want a GTX280.

Even with the 8000 series, threads were not as unanimous as this, simply because you were paying for the best, so there were always cheaper alternatives.

Now the cheaper alternative is pretty much the best, especially when you can buy 2 of them for the same price as nVidia's flagship.

Well they will have to drop one to 220 to make it so.

which will not happen:p

Thats the point.

The ATI card is so cheap but offers nearly the same performance.:D

I can spend 240 on two 4850's and beat GTX280 perfromance.

NV has lost the plot charging 500 for this release!

Its just cost me £270 to do that, I'll find out tomorrow if it was worth it. Somehow though, I reckon it was.

just asking but is their any other leading manufactuer of gfx cards? other than nvidia and ATi....i heard about voodoo but that was long time ago (10+years)

the GTX 280 is a nice fast card but ikts expensive to make and not really faster that 2 4850 in XFire.

They probably would yes!

The biggest problem is the size. I read that while Intel can get over 2,000 Atom processors from a wafer, Nvidia get closer to 200 GT280/260 chips.

Allowing for the fact that the yield will never be 100% either, I don't think they can afford to drop the price without a die shrink.

Not at the current time, no (unless you count integrated chipsets which we don't), the most likely new candidate is Intel with their new Larrabee architecture, people have rather mixed views about whether it'll be a good gaming card or not, though.

And... Uh.. S3's still a player at the very low end. :p

there is no sense going for a GTX 260, it's a bit of a red herring. Nvidia really need to bring its price down, but that will not happen, not to ATi's price point anyway.

Well I ordered one yesterday to replace my ageing 7800GT's. My plan is to get another one when the price drops to go SLi again. While the 4850 seems better I don't have a crossfireboard so its SLi all the way for me.

Yeah better performance boost for your dollar wouldve been a new Mobo and new Ati card.

If I was starting from fresh then I agree but my EVGA board cost about £200 so I am reluctant to change that as its a cracking board.
The GTX260 arrived a while ago and its installed and I am very happy so far. Lots of tweaking to be done but all good so far.
