!!!IN STOCK ATI 4870!!!

I think we've got the GDDR5 bit cleared up :p

Just to add, the number you quote above is the amount of vram or framebuffer. Simplified, its how much storage area the card has (minus overheads) for textures etc. The bandwidth (bus width x effective speed) is how fast it can move/access said data in/out of the framebuffer.

Yep, but what a lot of people forget or don't know is that the ATI cards have far better data compression than nvidia so can infact squeeze more into 512mb than nvidia could.

Still pi55ed that my order didnt get dispatched considering it was placed minutes after the 4870's went on sale :/

I'd never heard of PowerPlay before I bought a HD3450 but from an ECO point of view its a welcome tech. Hopefully it is just a matter of a driver update to get it sorted.

Yeah at load it seems to be drinking the same wattage as ye old 8800GTX, fair enough in some respects as its a more capable card but I want MORE performance using LESS Juice! . . . Just like what INTEL are doing with their CPU's kinda . . .

The power draw at present isn't a deal-breaker but it would make it so much more desirable if it was more power efficient, ho hum give it a few years . . . :o

They'll probably get shrunk to 45/40nm at some point or another, presumably in 6 months since their release cycle is similar to Intel's tick-tock only every 6-8 months rather than a year.

Idle power draw will become more & more important as fuel bills rise & rise.

I dread to think what the 4 PC's in my house cost to run, considering 2 are on 24/7.

Can't believe the performance of these considering the price tag on them!

I'm very tempted to Crossfire a pair of HIS IceQ 1GB versions when they come out :D

I'm just wanting to wait and see if the 1GB versions have a noticeable increase in performance compared to the 512mb

I've got a 8800GTX and game at 1680*1050 for those that care.

Roughly, how much better does 2 of those make at a 1680 x 1050 res? just wondering because id rather have high framerates at that res, than to buy a 24" and have terrible minimum fps at its max res.

i think SLi + Xfire start to kick in after 1024 x 768 right?

I still dont get this GDDR5 stuff, I dont get it, all I know is its usually DDR for ram which is *2

GDDR5 is basically *4 that's all there is to it really.

On another note it seems there is a bios around that fixes powerplay for the 4850's lets hope there is one for the 4870's soon too.

[edit]

This seems to be the MSI bios with fixed powerplay if anyone feels brave enough to try it. It clocks the GPU at 160MHz and the RAM at 500MHz when in 2D mode by the looks of it
