All the Hype !!!

People at B3D more or less assume that stardard Box AA is now done in the rops, not the shaders. Only CFAA modes (tent wide/narrow, edge detect) are still done in the shaders, hence why the performance hit is still so big.

So basically you'll get top performance at 8xAA Box Filter but try any other filtering mode and you'll get a 38xx series class penalty.

People have done test to confirm this. Even your test confirms this.

3dm06 is not a good indication of GPU performance nowadays, I don't know why people still think it is...?

My 4850 scored only about the same as my 8800GT in 3dm06, but games are a different story.

At least 25% faster in everything, and in some games nearly 100% better.

you could not be closer to the truth. #dmark scores are all about e peen . No need tbh its all about how the games play and weather or not ure happy ;)

Yes 3dmark

However, like some Crysis test's/benchmarks, it would be more interesting to test at (say) 1680 x 1050 res with ALL AA/AF on, rather than stock settings.

Glad I never went through the hassle of flogging my 8800gt Sli and 780i setup for the 4850 setup if what the OP is posting is true.

I have only just got this build at its sweet spot with the Q6600 @3.5ghz and the 8800gt's at 740mhz/2ghz :)

Lovely! :)

Just six months old though! :o

Thanks, well I had one GT on release and then picked up a second a couple of months back for dirt cheap :) The next PC game I will be playing will be WAR and I doubt I will have to upgrade for that :p

I remember Easyrider posting about the 8800gtx being "old tech" before the release of the 8800GT's... biggest mistake EVER flogging my sexy black PCB GTX for the highly inflated priced GT (caught up in the hype but never again :D)

thats true, most of ther people on here are just hype junkies and there isnt always need to upgrade . I Find sometimes waiting is better as u get cheaper products and better drivers ;)

When u say release do u mean release day or?

somethings not quite right there as 8800GT's were pretty cheap on release, the price hike only happened a few days later once people realised how good there were and add to that the big nVidia manufacturer wasn't ready to mass produce them.

3dmark 06 is fine, but you have to use your brain, its 2 years old, the default setting was default and useful 2 years ago(well 3 years old i guess, they normally come out before the named year don't they?). The card is more powerful, default settings have been cpu limited for well over a year, they were cpu limited with 8800's and 2900/3800 series cards why would it be different now. You can VERY CLEARLY see gpu power available if you up the settings to higher resolution and higher AA/AF settings. Likewise, the 4850 and 4870 cards ARE high end no matter the price, you still want to be buying them to use with 1680x1050 settings or preferably higher. Reviews don't, well they might not all be accurate, but they don't really lie. However everyone choses certain sections of games to test in general and these don't represent performance for every single second and you can't expect every game to perform at the same level at all times.

AS for AA settings, higher AA settings come at the cost of exponential performance hits, not scaled. 8xaa box isn't the same as 8xaa edge detect, infact, i forget which one its equivilent to, they aren't the same settings with slightly different filters, they are increasing levels of AA, rather absurdly labled, so wide edge detect 8xaa is supposed to be really 10-12x AA, and as said, every bump in AA level takes with it a not scaled performance hit.

Anyway about it, reviews pretty much say that they are faster cards, simple as that, if they aren't giving faster numbers rather than complain about the speed, find the fault.

if 100 people say the cards are faster and give quantifiable results and you have an issue. Are they all wrong, experienced testers, or is something wrong with your setup?

Well I was spamming refresh all morning and at 2pm the card cost me just under £200 from Ocuk (the cheaper cards were pre-order only).

hehe there is some truth about that but a lot of us have been in this game for years and know a good thing when we see it

there isnt always need to upgrade
Nope never! Most people upgrade because they want to. In a sad geeky way I personally enjoy swapping out hardware and seeing massive gains!

I Find sometimes waiting is better as u get cheaper products and better drivers ;)
Deffo some truth in that as well but you need to practice selling hardware as much as buying hardware! See something shiney, read about it, buy it and play . . . if its not your cup of tea you sell it.

Its good to read reviews and see some detailed user feedback but nothing is as good as owning the hardware yourself, for a while at least! :D

Haha you sound like a pro! :)

I paid £155 for the 8800GT on launch day, it was about 11pm at night and yes it was indeed pre-orders which arrived 5 days later. Nowt wrong with preorders and I don't mind waiting a week or so as long as the price is the keenest possible! ;)

I think for us "enthusiasts":p there is just something compelling about launch day :o ... like if you are going to get the new card thats the highest chance day of a purchase and as the days go by the chance of a purchase decreases?!?!

I know what I mean :)

I paid 280 for my 2900XT on launch :p
Well it doesn't always pay to buy every GPU on launch! :o

That was the first time I really saw your posts Tom, I think u had just hatched from your nOObzilla egg at that stage! ;)

Funny I associate people with hardware, heres my list:

Tom|Nbk = Radeon HD2900XT
easyrider = Opteron 170
Jokester = Samsung 64GB Solid State drives
WJA96 = Thermalright HR-01
Will Hub = nVidia 8800GT

plenty more where that came from!

edit:

Raikiri = Arctic Cooling Accelero s1

Are you high o.O?

I'd been buying hardware long before the 2900 :D but yes maybe I did become a more of an active poster in here from it :p

Deffo . . . well in a kinda sad geeky got no life way thats 100% right!

Always am reading the web reviews and many forums posts at the same time as filling 6 shopping carts with the same product!
