Uefa president Michel Platini has warned England’s top clubs that they face being banned from the Champions League if they continue to build up huge debts.

"Platini insists it is unfair that clubs with such debts continue to go out and spend big money on players, and he is actively looking to stop it happening.

Uefa is going to fight to regulate access to its competitions for clubs who are in debt,” Platini revealed.

“I am not just talking about United and Chelsea, who got to last season’s Champions League final with a big debt, I am speaking in general.”

Cristiano Ronaldo’s proposed £80 million move to Real Madrid sparked Platini’s revelations, but he insists he is not against big-money transfers.

“If a club has money and wants to invest in a player it has every right to do so.

“I am more worried about a club that is in debt and spending £10 million on a player. We are going to regulate this.”

 I think this bloke likes the sound of his own voice too much. Any excuse to have a dig

Surely that rules out almost all major clubs from taking part since so many have debt, some of which will be unserviceable without the financial windfall that is the Champions League and so we could potentially even have big clubs going to the wall if they don't have very rich backers prepared to write off the debt.

Manchester United is only in debt because it got taken over, a few years ago it was way in the black.

Hell, doesn't Real Madrid have huge debt too?

one of the ways for these team to get rid of their debt is to take part in competitions like the CL and uefa cup..he doesnt want them taking part in their competition which can help reduce their debt because theyre in debt..interesting...

His ideas always seem to be the kind of thing you would want in a perfect world, but in reality they're completely out of place.

He is an idiot but I do think that this is a good point, obviously he's being OTT, but I agree with the general idea.

It just proves that all footballers are thick! If a company is on the LSE, there is nothing to prevent the takeover of that club via capital raised through leveraged debt. It is impossible to police as the only way you can avoid debt is by having an owner like Abramovic and lets remember, chelsea is a plc, as are all rpivately owned clubs, just with one shareholder.

What he should do is make football cheaper for the fans and the clubs. If he was suggesting a wage cap I would support it, but that would make sense. Real Madrid would be buggered if he ot his way, at least United's debt is servicable.

Between Platini and Blatter, football really is in safe hands

Wouldnt the king of spain just tell the banks to write off the debt though? he has history of that i think.

I thought the training ground for Real Madrid had been bought from them at an inflated price and then a new state of the art one built for their exclusive use at his instigation but the effect is similar.

Platini, the biggest Anglophobe in world football.

Uefa president Michael Platini attacks 'cheating' English clubs

Platini: I'll stop Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and United poaching the kids

He a man on a mission. If these we French clubs I bet his outlook would be slightly different. My biggest problem with him is he very vocal about his dislike of England, if he wants to ruin the English game he could at leased be a bit more subtle about it.

Things like this make me laugh

PLATINI NOT BOTHERED BY ENGLAND KO

EDIT: Tbh I think it's about time the top clubs G14 gave UEFA and ultimatum. Stop interfering with our clubs and our leagues or we'll leave the association and form our own. I think if the PL lead the rest would follow.

I dont know about any other clubs but as far as im aware united and liverpool arent actually in debt are they? Its the parent companies?

Platini needs kicking out, all he ever does is speak out against england and anything related, suprised he's still in the job.

There seems to be an anti-English sentiment in the leadership of world football though. Maybe it's because of how the fans act abroad, or because the top teams (Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal) have been so successful in Europe, especially recently. 3 English teams in semi-finals 2 years running etc.

Most corporate organisations are saddled with debt, football clubs are corporate organisations. What the hell is going on about? He wants to penalise a company for behaving like a company?

ANd why is he even mentioning Man Utd who in debt through no fault of their own after the Glazers bought the club with borrowed money : /

It's not as if the spending on players, stadiums, training grounds etc has caused them to go into the red.

Muppet. Someone kill him.

He's right that clubs shouldn't live beyond their means but his solution is less desirable than the problem he seeks to solve.

its not about being beyond the means, its about serviceable debt, which these clubs are servicing it.
