Was just wondering if anyone who still does this hobby was active on the forums, and if so could I email/ask some questions regarding it?

Cheers m'dears ;)

Was basically looking to start messing around with them again out of a mix of boredom, nostalgia and desire for a new hobby.

I was wondering whether there was much difference between the armies gameplay wise, and whether or not someone was willing to help me decide. I was also wondering whether or not there was much difference between the gameplay of Warhammer and WH40K.

I don't know if I am going to play or just paint them, but I'd rather pick an army I would play if I'm taking the effort to paint it all :p

Also (yes, another question :o) would it be possible to have the required tools pointed out, and whether or not it is better to start painting single models or better to practice with entire units?

Thanks a bunch.

it's a rock paper scissors game atm, with a massive amount of codex creep (ie the next codex is always going to be better/more capable/powerful than the ones before).

currently the games are quite dis similar, but with races as a reoccurring theme (elves = eldar, empire = imperial guard etc etc). there isn't too much in the way of tools you will need in the beginning, but i'd advise not to buy anything bar models, paints and paint brushes for games workshop, there is far better quantity and quality for less elsewhere.

you'll need:

craft knife
clippers
plastic cement
super glue

and various paint brushes, those are the essentials.

what style would you like to play? gun line, assault, mix, vehicle heavy, infantry heavy etc etc?

warhammer 40k is becoming slightly more like warhammer under 5th edition, but it's still a very different ball game, warhammer is certainly considered to be a more veteran part of the hobby with most people spending years on 40k before even considering the 'original', i prefer 40k myself, been playing for 7 years, i like warhammer, but i can't get me head around the rules, i am also a fan of the lord of the rings one they have, which is a very simple game, but one of the best rulesets around, it has been used for numerous other games from various other sources

The easiest to paint are Space Marines so if you are a beginner start with those. the best looking are Tyranids easily i spent 6 hours doing 1 nid tyrant.

Basically get your men (or women) and spray them in white or black (Black for darker tones and are easier to paint, white for vibrant colours and errors show more easily, it also has an effect on the colour scheme you are choosing.

Glue them with plastic cement/super glue depending on the mould of the model.

then start with base coating which will be your primary colour and leave out parts like trims/eyes (ie the trick parts or colours you dont want.

Add darker shadows to add effect (mix colours black/base colour) but you dont want to go too dark.

So for that Part.

- Easel (White Tile)
- Paints
- Basecoat (blac/White spray)
- Glue (plastic cement for plsatic, super glue for metal)
- pair of trimmers to get rid of nasty bulks and a file to get them smooth
- Facemask (for the spraying)
- And some decent quality brushes, dont buy cheap packs the Games Workshop pack is quite good.

The internet is good for teqniques if you want to get into the painting side of it.

I think I like all of it :(

I would say I would find a mix of all of it would be useful, unless there's any specific advantages to any of them? Don't want to be too specialised, I guess.

if you want to get a really easy/quick army in relatively little time may i suggest something like eldar, with a white undercoat, add on some of the new washes, hey presto, nice looking army in minutes.

some good places to visit (probably get more input on these sites ;))

http://warseer.com/ - click the forum link, i'm a member of both, warseer is good for rumours, but the ammobunker is a much more friendly, small community, but i prefer it :), look me up under bringerofdecay :)

most armies can mix and match (but generally tend to be better at one thing over the other). i wouldn't get marines as a starter army, you will get bored of them very quickly, especially seeing the Carbon Copies of your marines everywhere, i'd say they're best left until you want to build your own chapter, i'd start with something like tyranids or daemons (they're the latest army out, there is some loverly models) eldar. as i've mentioned is a good option, they're a very sleek army and can be very forgiving to the newb.

if you want an army of, well, humans in space then go for the imperial guard option, lots of tanks, lots of soldiers, they operate very similarly to todays modern armies and they're due a new codex, either December or January. (i recently started them myself, thye don't always win, but it's very nice to play with something...human (oh har har  :p)

Ah i havnt played it in years! Though i always cited fantisy as better than 40k, more on the basis i liked the old magic rules (5th/6th edition i think) and my goblin/giant army usually won (on the basis 2 giants 100 goblins and as many shamans is i could fit in always seemed completally unstopable) :)

Depressingly the best way to pic an army was always to read the books on how others descibed the armys typical style of play and choose the one that most appeals (i really didnt like the poncy armys).

Only many problem i found with it is that all the modles have gone up in price again :(, apparently this is because of inflation but to me everything was £5 but meh i think im getting old

I've heard that there's a new version of 40k out next month so should be interesting. I used to play a lot but I'm wanting to get back into the painting side of things so looking forward to some new models coming out. :)

models are hugely expensive if you buy from GW, just by buying from an independent stockist you can save up to 25%. however, they are about on par price wise with many other miniature makers (rackam (sp?) and flames of war for example)

yep, 5th out next month, looks MUCH better than 4th from what we have seen so far, seems to be a far more solid rules set, i'm looking forward to it :D

Am currently stuck between Eldar and Necrons because they seem fairly easy to paint. Tau are up there too. What are the (dis)advantages of these races? Eldar seem okay but look like ladyboys!

eldar and necrons are hard as hell, necrons having some of the best shooting in the game, combined with THE best vehicle, but they are limited in terms of options (only about 10 completely different units) and they phase out once 75% of the army is killed, however they have we'll be back (an extra 'save') which makes them pretty tough.

eldar can be weak, or strong, depending how you play, they have lots of different options that need to support each other, a unit of eldar on its own will fail, but bck it up and it's be a tough time for any opponent, they also have some of the most survivable vehicles in the game (set to get slightly less survivable under 5th, but by no means cripplingly so)

tau are the consummate shooters, they can lay out even the most well armoured enemy, but they suck in hand to hand, they use allies like kroot as hand to hand protection, and sit out and shoot, unless you go heavily in to the mech tau aspect they are very static.

like i said, it's very rock paper scissors, but any of those 3 are an excellent choice, and i've played as/owned each in turn in my 7 years, necrons and eldar certainly look very striking across the table, and the guns of the tau are always daunting :)

at the end of the day pick what looks good, and what you reckon you can paint and go from there.

One thing to remember, is they are bringing out the 5th edition WH40k in about 2-3 weeks, including a new starter box with what are apparently some pretty good models (given they are very simple/cheap), so that might be the place to start if you're looking at starting fresh again.

I'm currently playing Tau - lots of shooting stuff (basically a distance fighting army), and the new rules should mean they aren't quite as weak in close combat as 4th edition rules (a single half decent marine could in theory + reality rip through a 12 man FW squad).
I like to always take gun drones as cheap, nuisance units, they are too effective/dangerous to ignore for most opponents but if you try and take them out, you're missing out on taking on more dangerous units, as if you ignore them they can take out light/mid tanks and transports (in a couple of games i've got them behind rhinos and the like, and they've killed it).

I've also got the Daemon box set to paint, which can be used in both Warhammer and 40K (you just need to use square bases), apart from the bloodcrusher (I think that's the beastie), they are almost entirely a close combat type force, but without being a horde army (unlike orcs, guard and nids).

It can be very expensive though, I think in the past two years i've spent nearly £600 on my bits, including
2x Tau mega force sets (one was very cheap, the other got me started - o've not started painting the second set)
Rapid insertion force set - 9 crisis suits and some stealth suits (I'm planning on a Farsight led force at some point, 9 suits armed with close quarters weapons should be rather effective).
Empire Army box for Warhammer - currently painting.
Chaos Daemons set - possibly to use in both games.
Vallejo paint set - I seem to get on better with them than the standard GW paints (and you can get metallic medium for it, which leads to metallic reds, blues and greens once you add ink)..

*In one game I had a very expensive (for the size of the game) troop of blood letters and khorn marines chasing a very cheap unit (4x gun drones) for the better part of 3 rounds when they should have been trying to capture something - unfortunately I think the blood rage has been removed now for khorn :(

It's easier for me to sat I've, and I'm, rather than my brother and he's..honest ;)

Flib, that would be rogue trader wouldn't it?
I think we've got second, 4th and soon 5th edition rules (we never really got into it on 2nd and didn't look again until a couple of years ago).

Some of my brothers friends have got pretty much all the warhammer/40k rules and codexs since day one between them (they all started playing at about the same time and at least one of them has been playing ever since). One of them has a loft absolutely full of the models, I think he can probably field at least 500 points of any army (and for some much much more).

I've just been playing with an airbrush recently (we bought an Iwata last year and basically not used it), and it looks like i'll be using it for all my larger models (tanks/skimmers) soon - it did a rhino in about 30 minutes with a very smooth coat once we got the mix right on the paint and air (about 50/50 for vallejo game colour with water, and 12psi).

I paint and play and have done for many years :)

I'll be back with a fountain of knowledge later when I'm slightly less hungover :(

Used to love collectiong and painting these also used to love the artwork, havnt seen one for years either. I would have loved to take up playing the game a lot more but i just didnt have a community or like minded friends to take it up with.
Might look into this again once i stop throwing money at my amp!

it's a pretty nice game to do actually and it's something you can quickly put down and pick up again at your own leisure, and painting can be very relaxing. as a rule i try to avoid anyone under 16, they tend to be pretty appalling gamers (rules 'bending', using to many points etc etc) this is not always the case (we have a really good little kid who visits the store, can't be older than 13 but he's an excellent painter and gamer), but it is a pretty good rule of thumb :p.

damian666; there must be a club/store in your area, where abouts do you live?
