All New Summer 2008 Transfer Merry Go Round/Rumour Mill

Martins signed a new contract under Ashley which got rid of the clause.

"Kevin Keegan is determined to strengthen his squad not weaken it and, as a result, Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has sanctioned a two-year extension to Martins' contract and a 50 per cent rise in wages to £90,000 per week.

And, as part of the deal, Martins has agreed to forfeit a £13m release clause inserted into his previous deal." From the Telegraph.

Crappy reporting by The Sun as usual then.

indeed, does peeve me that the Sun doesn't bother to look into something as simple as that

Veteran striker Andy Cole, 36, has been offered £25,000 a week by Nottingham Forest to sign on a free transfer following his release from Sunderland.

Not sure how I feel about this. Home town boy and everything but is he still £25k a week good?

I'm feeling very optimistic about the forthcoming season. More so than I've felt for a long time. I guess starting the season with no management worries and we've made some good signings before the start of pre-season training. Hopefully, the squad will be fitter from the offset.
I feel fitness will be the key to our season. If we can keep our first team fit then we'll do well... very well, I'm just not so sure about our backups.

...........................Gomes

Hutton......Woodgate.......King.........Bale

Lennon........Modric......(??????)......(???????)

..............Berbatov..........Keane

With 2 more quality players in those spots, that's an exciting team :)

Yeah, but we better not get Adebayor. Hmmm Drogba seemed to be going just before the end of the season, now he seems to be staying. I think we need to get rid of Pizarro and have another good striker as back up if Shevvy and Anelka still can't stand up to the mark.

Actually, saying all those names we have amazing strikers, just a pitty they haven't lived up to expectations.

Martins would have been good, but obviously not to be. I feel if we just had a 2nd Drogba as in strength and power terms.

As for Tottenham, your defence doesnt look too amazing tbh. :S. Ive forgotten about Bale wasnt he signed for you last season as a wonder kid or something? And who's Hutton.

What's the news on Berbatov and King?
News is Spurs don't want to sell Berb's and don't have to but I think he'd move to Man Utd if offered the chance...

Not heard much on King tbh.

How about this midfield?

Bentley/Lennon... Modric/Huddlestone... Diarra/Jenas... Capel/Dos Santos...

First choice on left/ backup on the right :)

Bale was pretty awesome for us at beginning of season then picked up a serious injury, keeping him out for the season. He's now fit.

Who's Hutton? Jeezus you Chelsea fans are worse than most Man U fans... don't know anything about anyone else outside your own club!

He's a boyhood Liverpool fan though and if the price is right it could happen. Look at Shevchenko, everyone said he was Milan through and through...

I would love Keane at Liverpool, he is a born goalscorer and would be ace with Torres.
One of the most unlikely transfers imho... Remember all the tranfers in Keane's early career? Never at one club for more than season... he's now one of our longest serving players and captain to boot in Kings absence.

He's very settled and happy by all accounts and it would take something drastic for him to change that. Also he's very important to Spurs future plans... a club that's definately building for the future and in no need to sell any players.

Nice side that, still waiting on Gomes to obtain a WP though (hasn't played for Brazil which could prove a stumbling block).

The back four picks itself, providing King stays fit it should do well, but there is always going to be that question mark over him, and his ability to last 2 games a week.

The Bentley deal is as good as done according to some news reports, which could spell the end of Lennon, either as a first teamer or as part of the deal for Bentley. Then you will have Modric, Zokora and dos Santos in the remaining midfield spots. Although we are looking at bringing a new DM to replace Zokora.

The strikeforce picks itself. The rumours on Berbatov have gone quiet. Some ITK from other forums suggest Ramos has convinced Berba to stay one more season with a promise he can leave next summer if we fail to deliver either the UEFA Cup or a Champions League spot. That is unless Ronaldo leaves United, which could see them make a bid.

Keane to Liverpool is a possibility if they could afford to buy him. Rumours are that he has asked to speak to Liverpool (again an ITK report) because he is a Liverpool fan. However, not so long ago he was interviewed saying he didn't want to leave Spurs. It is likely his future will rest on what happens to Berbatov.

Possible rumours this week for Spurs include an official approach for Podolski (as Bent is likely to move on) and the hunt for a new DM continues. Capel has been quashed as our latest offer was turned down.

*If* anyone has offered anywhere near the 30 mil being banded about for Adebayor Arsene should bite their hands off. He's been disgraceful these last few days and shown up as nothing more than a mercenary, the fact he only has 1 good season to his name makes all of this even more unbelievable.

Couple of nice quotes from him:

'Barcelona have made a good financial offer and there is also the chance to play alongside great players.
'Yes, I am still under contract to Arsenal but it's up to the directors to satisfy my demands or I'll leave.
'People ask if I am asking for the same salary as Henry. That is not necessarily the question.

'But I am being considered a worthy replacement for Henry while not deserving his salary.

These rumours of Keane to Liverpool, and the situation with Barry indicates to me that Benitez is completely 100% focussed on the title.

He wants proven PL players and knows that the likes of Silva or Villa, although they're fantastic players, arn't guranteed to fit the mold of a team that will win the league.

As much as I'd like us to sign some more Spanish squad players, I can kinda see where he's going with his transfer wish-list.

Another plus to this is that when Benitez goes, there will be less Spanish players that go with him (I dread that day) :o
