Well thats in the USA, great news confirmed on the backwards compat on both songs and instruments. Also looks like the online will be improved. Which will be great if you can do the games world tour online plus have the benefit of playing RB1's songs......

To no one's surprise, Harmonix, MTV and EA are preparing an encore for Rock Band later this year. Rock Band 2 is now official -- and it's coming to Xbox 360 this September, with "other platforms" releasing later in the year.

Before you start deleting the dozens of tracks you've downloaded for the first Rock Band, know that RB2 features ground-breaking cross-title compatibility. There is no distinction between Rock Band 1 and Rock Band 2 DLC. Any DLC you've previously downloaded will instantly work with Rock Band 2 and all DLC will continue to work with the original game from here and into eternity. While Harmonix has yet to reveal the number of tracks included on the RB2 disc, with the inclusion of all the previously released DLC, the set list at launch may top 300 songs.

"As successful as the original Rock Band continues to be, we've now had the benefit of the last eight months to listen to our fans' requests and to build upon that foundation," said Alex Rigopulos, co-founder and CEO of Harmonix. "Rock Band 2 is a second-generation band game that will elevate the music game experience to the next level."

As with Activision's recently announced Guitar Hero World Tour, Rock Band 2 features all master recordings on disc. You can also expect major improvements to online functionality and a more "party friendly" set-up so it's easy to get guests rocking out faster.

While all RB1 peripherals will work with the sequel, upgraded versions will be available in a bundle pack. Harmonix isn't revealing what these upgrades are just yet.

Rock Band downloads will continue to arrive weekly for both Xbox 360 and PS3. Each track you purchase is essentially extending your library of Rock Band 2 tracks. And even though PS3 owners will have to wait longer to get Rock Band 2 on disc, they will still have access to new downloadable content with RB1. With Rock Band DLC having now surpassed 15 million paid downloads, there appears no end in sight for the most successful digitally distributed product on 360 and PS3.

So why release first on Xbox 360? "Microsoft has been a great partner throughout the launch of Rock Band in the last year and their continued support is instrumental in supporting the more advanced features and cross title compatibility we will have in Rock Band 2," a Harmonix representative told IGN. "Of course, our goal is to make Rock Band 2 accessible to all and we look forward to bringing Rock Band 2 to all relevant platforms later this year."

predictable timing. I wonder if europe will get it by then? And if so a bit annoying that they can justify releasing it so soon after rock band 1. If its good and challenging enough then I might get it over GH4.

I doubt very much it will be september for us. Its 1 year after rockband 1 for the americans, which is not too bad. Personally it will probably just be a solus purchase for me anyway and with 300 odd tracks thats a bargain even at £40.

I'd be happy to get it for xmas release.

I certainly dont need any more plastic instruments in the house.

Glad all my DLC is transferable to RB2 also. I have spent a fortune on it.
WIll import the PS3 version again as soon as it comes out, least i wont need new instruments, although i bet they will be redesigned. I think they will change it so there is a high hat and 3 pads.

The transfer of DLC is whats held me back from buying more. No such worries anymore so I will buy a lot more content. :)

OT I synched my aerosmith account now jumpurs after getting your friend request. Took a while for it to update the scores.

As a Euro PS3 owner that's been desperate to play Rock Band since well before even the US release and still doesn't have the game... I find this absolutely hilarious. I honestly, can't believe that they'll be releasing the Sequel in the US before the first game is even released in europe for the PS3. If I wasn't laughing so hard about it, I think I might actually cry a little. ;)

Your my only friend, nobody else seems to have linked their account lol

Import it?

Good news that the DLC is backwards compatible. I wonder how characters are handled? Can I take my rockers into RB2 and back to RB1 or am I going to have to create new ones?

The fact that Europe barely has RB1 in its paws (if you are 360 owner) is laughable though.

Import it?

I was offered it for £100 on the marketplace here back in March as the guy wanted a quick sale, I decided against it due to the track record of the equipment and the lack of warranty. I feel like a right punk for not doing it now. Since then i've forced myself stick to my guns with the attitude "They can't keep making us wait longer and longer, can they?".

I've about given up now though, I can't believe the sequel will be released in the US before the original is even out here, it's just completely unheard of these days. Massive screw up on HMX's part tbh.

will the guitar hero world tour stuff be compatible ? and vice versa.

I am bordering on getting some kind of drum kit etc but dont know wether to get the rock band stuff or wait and get the guitar hero stuff.

Hopefully they remove the region restrictions from the game this time so I don't have to wait a year after America to get it.

Well I was being all cynical about us getting this some time in 2015, but we may be getting it in September as well, depending on how you read the update to this news post:

Update: There have been some wires crossed here. EA’s just told us the date “hasn’t been confirmed” for Europe. More soon.

EA has confirmed to VG247 this morning that Rock Band 2 will release for 360 in Europe in September, as is now confirmed for the US.

“Yes, it’s the same for Europe but we don’t have a confirmed release date,” said a rep. “No other details have been announced.”

The company confirmed via IGN this morning that Rock Band 2 will release on Xbox 360 in September in the US, with the game to follow on “other platforms” later in the year.

While details are light at the moment, it’s known that the sequel will come with upgraded instruments, but will still support the peripherals from the original game.

Treat as a rumour for now.

Didn't buy Rock Band because of the price and the faulty hardware. If it wasn't for these reasons I would have bought it in an instant.

Haven't really heard much about this but I think Guitar Hero IV looks really promising, Everlong by Foo Fighters, custom music and very cool looking peripherals (particularly the drumset).

Can't wait to see more about both of them :)
