Radeon HD4870 X2 results

Finally - I have said all along that eventually AMD will start to capitalize on the fact that it can now offer a fully integated solution (CPU/GPU/Mobo) thus allowing for greater optimization and eventually better performance. Spyder was disappointing, but not surprising considering it was the company's first swing after all the turmoil. This next generation could be awesome though.

It's the little things like the fact that CrossfireX now means that if your 790FX board has an onboard gfx card, rather than being ignored, it will contribute to your system and make it quicker - genius!

I can very easily see intel getting blind sided the way nVidia did - nVidia still has the fastest single card solution available - but who cares, Ati/AMD offers such good value that even the enthusiasts are going for it. I can see the same thing happening when Nehalem gets launched - you can pay £1600 for your new intel/nVidia package, or for £500 you can get the full AMD one, and that'll even include a couple of GFX cards!

I know what I'd choose - let's just pray that the 45nm AMD's finally hit the mark :D

Why?

Will they suddenly match your Q6600 or something??
I just like matching stuff is all. If AMD brought out a quad-core Phenom that clocks nicely I'd possibly be interested in buying one, especially since my Q6600 clocks utterly rubbish. :D

Though, I can't see it happening. My next CPU will probably be Nehalem.

On that page I read something about interoperability between 3800 & 4800 cards...am I reading that right???? Would be awesome if so!

Would be great for me if it can without any detriment to the new card, I was going to sell my 3870x2 and upgrade to the 4870x2 but I could keep it and gain extra power... = win. :D

I expect it only works in the same series though so won't.

"A source close to AMD told us that there will be “inter-generation compatibility” between the Radeon 3800 and 4850: “Since they're both DirectX 10.1 parts, there is no reason why those two should not work together. (…) We will probably not qualify this interoperability, but who stops you from trying?"

It appears that ATI did not integrate a driver lock or something else that would stop you from combining a 3870 card with a 4850 or with a 4870 model. Just keep in mind that these two cards need to include the same amount of memory. If you mix and match a 3850 with 256 MB of memory with a 4850 512 MB, the 4850 card will default to 256 MB. If you wonder whether you will be able to combine a 3870 X2 card with a 4850 board, our sources indicated that this scenario should work as well."

This would be awesome if so....especially for the 3870x2 owners!

*Imagines my 3870X2 paired with the 4870 coming tomorrow and drools.*

Can you try it Ulfhedjinn and let us know if this works? That would be a very valuable piece of info for a lot of people I think (me included!) :)
I only have 16x/4x (P35 board) but I will give it a go for you. :)

Performance is not important, seeing if it actually works is!
