Super RV770

Now even a 4870 single will beat a GTX280 at those speeds I would guess.

Never mind two in xfire :D

so what? that's their choice.

just as over the last couple of years, i've picked ati cards even though nvidia have been on top. it's called personal preference. :)

It's called personal preference, but then there's a huge amount of people that will only buy NV because they don't know any better. The biggest thing NV has going for it is brand awareness.

Some people who don't know any better, would buy an 8600 and be chuffed with them selves because they've got an NV 8 series. Not because of its performance.

Most people who don't have a clue will think NV cards are the only graphics cards, and I've experienced this first hand many many times.

A friend of mine is looking for a 'budget' graphics card for around £120 or so, I've recommended him a 4850, but he's got some n00b friends who are telling him to get lowly NV cards because they're 'better'.

Well, he's very interested in the 4850 anyway, and is hoping to get one soon.

The trend seems to come from MMO n00bs who think they're 'techheads' and who only really know of NV. Another friend of mine knows a few people who are hardcore NV fanboys, and who are convinced crossfire doesn't scale, so is not an 'option'.

But won't these clocks be achievable with the regular 4870's through things like Rivatuner or ATI Tool?

Not so sure, all the articles keep referring to "bios unlocking" . That would lead you down the route that software won't do it plus they may have more voltage through them than normal cards.

Chances are you won't get those clocks without flashing a normal card with a super bios which some people aren't prepared to do.

Maybe even then you won't get enough voltage either.

So no means certain that you will get those clocks from standard cards.

Exactly, there's brand loyalty then there's throwing your money away. My personal take is that the computer parts industry, given how dymanic it is has no space for brand loyalty, and you should never let 1 brand dictate your purchasing.

Whats interesting also is that the sites I've seen that have o/c 4870's have all said they are sure they will go further than the 790 core and 4400 memory that the ATI CP allows, cant wait to see if next Rivatuner allows further even with stock sink and fan, 825/4600 would be great

I do have to say that I'm guilty of being brand loyal though, I refuse to give any of my money to NV, as I don't agree with a lot of their practices, especially they way they've currently been behaving.

Though I know I'm not the only one as I've noticed a lot of people are beginning to feel the same way about NV. The fuss and rubbish about Assassin's Creed and DX10.1 put me completely off them for good (well until they start playing nicely anyway :D).

Maybe true but they may still only have 1.2v going through the gpu so will be limited on overclcoking whereas the "super" watercooled ones might be set to 1.4v in bios and henc more overclocking headroom.

We shall have to wait and see.

I see the people at nVidia as very arrogant, but I'd still buy their cards in a shot if they proved to be superior in my price range. Honestly, the reason I'm backing ATi at the moment is because their cards genuinely look superior to me. I couldn't care less if AMD, nVidia or even Sun Microsystems for all it matters brought them out to be honest.

I usually rotate, whatever card I see as good value I will get, this has lead me to embarking on both red and green territory. Just want the X2 to hurry up to replace this GTS (which my girlfriend is quite pleased to get as it will run RCT3 and The Sims at 16000000x AA probably :p)

Mario Gastelum, director of product development & engineering stated that the “The Diamond Radeon HD 4870 XOC Black Edition was clocked to kick some ass. We wanted the fastest card that could kick the living daylights and bust some performance records".
Crikey looks like a beast! bet that will cost a pretty penny!

I'm kinda thinking X1900XT becomes X1900XTX all over again!

And I love the way these directors of big silicon companies speak! Lol who is opening a can of whoop ass now! :D

I wouldn't call that brand loyalty, more like conscientious buying.

To me brand loyalty appears where someone unequivocally defends a company (or attacks a rival) based on the fact they have one of that company's products and feel the need to defend their choice of purchase regardless.

Trojan, see? See? Hah! The main problem is that it seems to necessitate water cooling. I'm sure someone will get these speeds on a decent air cooler though.

I'd love to see a review of this card against a GTX280, I'll bet you know who my money's on. :)
