Right, Pretty much everything in my life has gone **** up.. I had this great new job starting in September, which now..they've decided too retract the offer and now i'm stuck in my dead end job. I had a great girl but we split which devastated me, Among other details which im not going too go into my heads in the shed. So I fancy some travelling simply because its something I couldnt have done if I did start that job and had a missus.

So basically I just want too hear some stories if you have been, how long you went for, where you went, how much you spent in total etc...
 
Went for a month last summer before i went to uni.

One of the best experiences iv ever had, made me really grow up and met some awsome people!

We stayed at - Amsterdam (;)), Berlin, Prague, Munich, Venice, Milan, Nice, Barcelona
 
Travelling was the best thing I ever did. Gave me a fresh outlook on life and confidence in things I'd never have considered before.

Cheapest areas are probably round SE Asia - Thailand, Nam, Bali, Malaysia, Lombok etc. - great food if you like curry etc., lots beaches, mountains to climb etc.

Expensive places are pretty much 'everywhere else' - e.g. Australia, USA, S. America, Europe etc.
 
New Zealand - 1 year (well, nine months due to a home sick g/f).

Best trip ever. Jumped out of a plane, Zorbed (google it!), kayaking in the Abel Tasman, swimming in the south pacific, stayed in a prison in Napier (it's now a hostel), partied a lot, lived on a boat for two weeks (in glorious sunshine and crystal clear, warm water), hill walkeed a lot, took a helicopter ride onto a glacier (awesome experience!), pretty much lived on a beach for three months (Kaiteriteri), swam with dolphins... Really too much to say here. best trip of my life.

Other cool places I've been... Canada (three times - I like Canada!) and Holland once.
 
I would also recommend South East Asia. Get a cheap flight to Bangkok with a return 3 months later and just go from place to place. I met up with some friends for a bit but also did a lot myself. Its really easy to meet people as so many others are in the same boat. Its also so cheap that you can live pretty well for next to nothing. The best bit is that getting around is so easy and cheap. Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia are all absolutely fantastic. Singapore is obviously the most expensive. Laos is stupidly cheap. You can live very well for a fiver a day (including hotel). There are lots of great things to do and see. But the best bit is the people you meet. There are hundreds of thousands of travellers from all over the world who all have fantastic stories to tell. Its great.

Agreed. Changes your perspective on life.

I would love to go travelling again, but am a bit tied down with work and girlfriend. If I ever get to do it, my next big trip is:

Flight to Peru, Peru to Chile, Santiago (Chile) to Rapanui (Easter Island), Rapanui to Fiji (didn't get to go when I was in NZ), Fiji to Japan, Japan to Cambodia, Nepal, Tibet, up through Russia, Northern europe and home!!!

Been thinking about it for years... will have to take a sabbatical for it.
 
do you want to travel for a while or a short break?

i went on a 3 week trip a couple of years ago

done Hongkong 3days - Cairns 3days - Sydney 8days - Bangkok 3 days


cost about £1200 for all flights including a 4* hotel in HK and a 5* in Bangkok

in Cairns we stayed in hostels for about £10 a night and in Sydney we planned to stay in hostels but ended up at the Ibis , cost about £3-400

took loads of spending money and credit cards and done loads of stuff - helicopter flights, diving, 4 wd off road tour up to Cooktown, various excursions, sight seeing flight in a light aeroplane, meals in swanky restaurants, sea fishing trip out of Sydney harbour + much more

think i spent around £1.5k total


had the time of my life :)
 
In the same boat at the moment... hating the job so I'm thinking of heading out to South East Asia for a few months travelling while I have no significant commitments in my life.

I'm looking to get to around the £3000 savings mark and then just up and go...

Just do it! I quit my first job after 3 years of slog because I wasn't enjoying it. The company was small and I couldn't see a way up or out. I panicked and thought I'd never get another IT job. Yet now, several years later I look back with great memories of my travels and despite still being in IT, I find more positives in what I do.

Try to save more - and make sure you have a safety net of friends / family you can come back to. £3k seems a bit tight, but will go far if you stick to cheap countries
 
Went for 7 months or so, spent £8K. Had the best time of my life.

travelled for nearly 3 years. best time of my life without a doubt

go for it.. if you can, for as long as you can afford.

edit: thailand was my fav place out of many.. lived there for nearly one year and would go back tomorrow if i could
 
I'm off for 6 months on 1st November and I'm going to:

Singapore - New Zealand - Oz - Fiji - Hawaii - Vancouver - LA - New York

I'm crapping myself a bit as I've never done anything like this before but I'm looking forward to not working and getting out of this country for a bit :)
 
Have you considered joining the armed forces?

Free travel, training and plenty of direction!
