Replacement for 6800GT

All depends what resolution you run at. If you have a high resolution LCD screen, it's worth getting a better video card, even with a slow CPU.

As you have an AGP system, I wouldn't spend much on what's effectively a technological dead end though.

I'd go for any of the following: another 6800GT, 7600GS, 7600GT, 2600Pro, 2600XT, HD3650, 8600GT. Keep it cheap.

Hi folks, I apologise for the rather large 'bump', but I've ran into an issue with my upgrade.

I bought the x1950 Pro, but it doesn't seem to send a signal to my monitor. I have an Antec 430w psu, and I think that might be the problem. I have an 'older' Tagan 480w psu lying around, but that didn't make any difference either. Is my graphics cad borked, or should I invest in a newer psu?

Sorry to but in a little here, but the X800 dont have Pixel Shader 3 right... What exactly does that do to any games out there?

I know its late now, but I upped my X800GTO2 to an X1800XT then to an X1900XT then a 8800GT and so on, but the X800GTO2 is still in a rig and it still plays all our Lan Games fairly well ( Although it is starting to show its age of course )

But as the original question... What does it do and on what games to make it so relevant!!!???

I have not noticed any games looking any better or worse you see..

PSUs should be fine. I take it that the fans spin up and so on?

What's your motherboard?

the motherboard is the MSI K8N Neo2 (nforce 3 if it helps). The fan spins, but I get nothing on the screen. I don't get any system beeps either.

I don't think my power supply has 28A on the 12v, if I'm reading the sticker on the psu correctly :(

a fair few newer games need SM3 just to work at all

thats it really

Exactly, so yet another so-called war of ATI v NVIDIA that meant absolutely sod all... I got an X800GTO2, modded it to 850 nacherely, my mate got a 6600GT cos it had SM3 and slagged me off about it.

Meanwhile, I had massively better frame rates, was able to play games higher res, and had a much better visual display all round, but hey, he has SM3

And by *** time games actually started to come out with SM3, we had both moved on anyway!!!

Sheesh!

OMFG I still got one of those boards... My 8yo son has it, with a XFX 6600GT but that was my first ever 64 Bit Machine - Winnie 3200 at the time. I think its a 4200 in there now though?

It won't be drawing anything like 28A on startup, so you should at least be able to boot up.

Try changing the cable to the other output connector on the card! Also make sure you have the secondary power connector plugged into the card :) (probably a four pin molex). Try to make sure it isn't a shared connector (i.e. your not running any drives from the same cables as the molex your using). If that fails, try reseating it, or increasing voltage to your agp port :)

As above, good advise, particualry re trying the other dvi connector (I assume your monitor is DVI or if your using VGA you know the converter/cables OK)

Yeah, if you think the PSU isnt enough, then just disconnect the drives - No matter how poor your PSU is, it wil run a Mobo ( Providing the PSU works of course )

Spinning Fan but nothing else is often a nasty sign, but...

Take the RAM and the CPU out, clear the CMOS and start it backup without them.

If it does the same, then try it with the CPU but no RAM.

If it stil does the same then the board is probably dead.

I say that because I have a board a while back that did the same, so I took it to bare basics, and then with the CPU only in, I got a bleep... It obviously had some life in it.

Also another good sign that the board might be ok, is that if you hold the power buttong for a few seconds and it powers off... The board still has life, and it will be somethign else!!!

thanks for the advice guys. I pulled out all the other molex plugs out on my hard drive, cd drive's etc, and put two dedicated 4-pins onto the graphics card, but it's still the same issue. I cleared the cmos before doing all that.

I'm still using the Antec 430w, as the Tagan is being used at the moment. I'm hoping I can do everything I can before I try and spend more money on a psu.

Edit: I plugged in my old 6800GT, and the comp boots up fine, along with the single beep. I don't get any beeps with the x1950. Does that help at all?

Erm if it boots up fine with the 6800GT and fails to boot with the X1950 then maybe, and this is a total wild stab in the dark here, but maybe the x1950 is the problem and not your Motherboard?

LOL

I didn't think it was the mobo, no (not sure where you got the idea from? :) ).

But is the card faulty, or the psu/mobo not up to the task? I wish I had a better psu to test it with first, before i decide to send the graphics card back.

You can just send it back and they can test it, refunding you or giving it back to you depending on the results
