4850 compared to a 8800GTX? Will I be impressed?

I've been lucky enough to play around with an 8800GTX in my PC for a couple of days. I currently have a 8600GT which is mine though. I'm attempting to save for a new graphic card.

If I go and buy a 4850 will it be better than the 8800GTX I played on? Or will it be slightly worse?

i moved from a 8800gtx to a HD4850.and yes i saw a big difference,3dmark 06 maxed out i scored 9000+ with a gtx,with my new 4850 im scoring around 13000 all maxed out with the cpu @ 3.8.
what resolution do you play on?

1680x1050 max.

Also, hows the noise and heat of these things. To be honest I'm not too worried about the heat, if they sell them like that then I'm sure they're safe to use...the noise however is a big concern. I use a heat pipe card at the moment with no fan which I love to bits simply because my PC is silent. I heard that the Sapphires were quite quiet?

3DMARK ain't real life.

Pick a non buggy/ported game that's known to be stressful, and play at 1920x1200 with MAX AA+AF and see if a 512MB Card can handle it better than your GTX (I doubt it).

EDIT : Bummer, You posted above as I was mid-typing this. see you cant go 1920x1200.

I doubt it (and don't listen to these new rumours about ATI 512MB is so far better that it can do 1920's or even higher).

He does not need a new card to run 1600's IMO now I read his new post.

i cant hear my HD4850 even when my akasa silent fans are going its that quiet,temps run @ 61idle and 71 after load.

No benefit at his RES or even 1920's in the few "Examples" above, to gain a few FPS when its already high enough.

Again IMO he does not even needed a new GPU, he should buy a 24" LCD.

I've just bought a 22". It does the job and doesn't need to be any bigger

A few fps? Its more than that apart from one of the benchmarks!

I'm happy for you but I although I know 1 card could have better Tech and gain more FPS over another at a given RES, its not a miracle and cant give massive FPS.

I have stated this and someone else has detailed it very much so in a thread here.

I will never ever go down to 512MB its pointless.

The OP does not need a new GPU for FPS gains alone.

I asked because I could simply go out and buy a £200 GTX. I think that it would be more senible to go for a newer cheaper card though which is better for £130. I just needed to confirm that a 4850 is better than a 8800GTX.

Don't matter if its 3FPS or 20FPS (if the above is even valid), he ain't getting too low FPS now esp at 1600's. :confused:

Not seeing massive amount of difference @ 1680 x 1200 between the 4850 and my old GTX in real world but bottom line, great price / performance ratio. I've got 2 in Crossfire and with the exception of Crysis (which for me has no benefit over a single card :mad:

), the performance is phenomenal.

They do get hot but under normal load the cards are reasonably quiet.

A great buy in my opinion
