My brother has been complaining about his internet running slow
So while off today i thought i would take a look.
Well i installed and ran avg and it found something like 20,000 infections so all these are cleared and removed from the virus vault but the pc is still rather slow.
Also i notice it is still getting these pop ups about the apple iphone and all the usual porn stuff

Is there anything decent to get rid of these things or is he going to need a format??

Thanks for the advice just bear in mind his internet is virtually unusable so i would need to download something on my laptop and then transfere it via memory stick..

disable system restore
remove avg

run..

ccleaner slim
nod32 av trial
spybot s&d
adaware
avg antispyware (remove this after)

put firefox on with adblock plus and Easylist subscription (do this on your pc too)

I swear you need to map this exact post to a keyboard shortcut for this forum... :p

Just going through all this now and for some reason when trying to install Nod 32 im getting an error saying that the administrator has set limits and it cant install ( or something along those lines) dont think my bro would know how to do this unless he has done it by mistake
Is there anyway around this??

it won't install from safemode by the way.. could be that..

if it's xp, then dial-a-fix can remove any bad registry policies that have been applied (to stop things installing etc)

Its not in safe mode im loged on as my bro and it just says it wont install but all the other things have done fine

Well i shall try dial a fix see if that will sort it out

Cheers

Didnt think of that but.....

Just tried it and i get the same message so im thinking that his pc is going to need a complete reinstall :(

Wont seem to install that keeps saying that i have avg8 on there even after i have deleted it.
Only thing i have managed to do is get a programe called bitdefender anyone know if this is anygood??

I have Kaspersky on 3 of my computers, I recently picked up a Zlob virus from a suspect exe file. I right clicked the file but Kaspersky did NOT detect anything but my browser opened and closed, so knew something was wrong. I then tested Kaspersky on the same file on my older computer and it recognized it as a Zlob. I did a full virus scan on the infected computer but Kaspersky didn’t recognise it. I did a web scan with Nod32, ran spybot S&D, nothing. I then did an on line scan with BitDefender which immediately recognized the Zlob, strangely enough as soon as BitDefender identified it, up jumped Kaspersky stating that it too had found the Trojan.

I used to have BitDefender for two years it used to slow my computer down (PIII 450mhz), having said that I never had a virus or trogan. I only had Kaspersky on my new system for about a week and got infected with a Zlob. Luckily the Zlob did not activate itself and recent scans with the installed Kaspersky and on line BitDefender (albeit using Internet Explorer) seem to have worked. When my three licences run out I'll go back to BitDefender

TBH I'd just reinstall XP. It's likely to have so much crap hooked deeply into the OS that it'll take you longer to get it running decently than it would just to format and start again. A fresh start never hurts anyway.

a clean format always does the trick, just save all essential date on DVD's so you can scan them once the new install is on and updated.

Yeah decided to take the re install route in the end just a pain in the bum i cant find any of his driver disks for anything :p
