*** The iPhone 3G Thread ***

For those of you going back to collect the ones that are being held for you, the guy in front of me in Liverpool Street CPW was doing exactly the same; he'd been there in the morning and had then returned at 11 to sort out the one being held.

Lo and behold, they couldn't find one when he went back and the had to order him another one for Monday delivery.

don't say things like that. i've touched the box now and everything just to have it ruedly snatched away from me!

So for those of us that have been to the stores and failed to get one (or for me only could get the opportunity to get a 8GB but decieded not to) what's the best way to get a 16gb now?

All 4 O2 & CPW in town sold out of 16GB at 7AM/8:02........ so when are they getting restocked?

The O2 and CPW website, when are they 'claiming' to deliver 16GBs?

Wait and see - my 16GB will be arriving next week so I think they've already sold their next consignment of 16GB ones.

This is my first iphone, so new to this activating guff, but on itunes, Im getting a:

We could not complete your itunes store request. The network connection timed out.

Does this just mean the server is overloaded and I'll have to try again later? Or is there some settings I got screwed?

Just played with V2 iphone in o2 shop and put it next to my V1 iphone.......oh my................

Its ****, its exactly the same, (**** as in no notable upgrades)

So understand this:

1) ITS IDENTICAL IN EVERYWAY (bar the back black cover, makes no difference to actually using it though

2) The GPS doesnt triangulate any more accurately than my signal location on my current iphone!!******* pointless, she said the GPS is only really for tom tom type software and -some- googles maps stuff (which having them side by side, they are more or less accurate than the other, id of expected street level accuracy inline with the presentations iv seen.

3) Since last nights update, edge now works everywhere on my phone (no idea why it didn't before, it only did in some places) and just loaded OCUK no less on both phones at the same time and emptied the cache mem before doing so, times:

2.5g iphone = 2/3 seconds
3g iphone = 2/3 seconds

It seemingly rendered the page like micro seconds after, **** all difference in real world terms

And thats it, im shocked and SO VERY HAPPY I DID NOT UPGRADE, its not even an upgrade !! I don't know what it is! but I do know for any end users it makes no difference

SO go and buy you cheapo v1's , they offer exactly the same day to day and a better battery life

EDIT:there are NO options anywhere in the phone about GPS I could see, not even on/off, nothing, it apparently only gets used by the software when it needs it, so no saving battery life by turning it off, the options menus are identical on both phones, even 'under the hood' (software wise) no difference

To me it feels like iv had real good value for money with my V1 now

How long do they need to be charged for? Mine was Reading full out of the box and after the first sync but the battery icon is showing two thirds now after half an hour of web browsing. Is this normal? Shall I just wear it flat then give it a good overnight charge? (first iphone post!)

Got it activated now... why can't I set the phone to 12 hour clock mode? Its greyed out on 24 hour clock? Me not like 24 hour mode!

Good. The form factor was excellent already. Why change it?

Rubbish. Once the GPS started working on mine it is accurate to the meter. Watching my location move along in the car over the satellite images is ace. Very very useful and way way more accurate than cell triangulation.

OK, very strange. My 3G is way faster on the web than my old one. Even in an edge location.

Glad you're happy. I'm sure all the people who got their 3G ones today are very happy too. Just like me.

If you say so. I'll stick with my free 3G one.

There is an option to turn off location based services. Didn't look very hard did you.

I cant download itunes so i got it off a mate via MSN. It still wont work though as it wont install. Is this because it needs to communicate with an apple server?

Im using the 29meg .msi installer.

Thanks

Phew just got back hectic day, but apple orientated day :)

Can anyone help with this query. I'm about to setup/activate my 3G iPhone. My contract on my existing O2 account finished in 2 months, but I was advised that I could simple activate the iPhone with this SIM and just pay for the last month. How does this work?

And apparently they have been unlocked already. Fabulous!

All I have to do is find somewhere to get a 16Gigger and pay my way out of my current contract (£175). O2 shop said phone customer services, customer services say I have to go to a shop..... nice that they have their story straight then!

For those having a problem with the Apple website for downloading iTunes 7.7, go into iTunes and Help / Check for Updates. 7.7 was in there for me and directly connected, downloaded and installed with no fuss. Though you obviously need an installed older version for this to work.
