*** The iPhone 3G Thread ***

And apparently they have been unlocked already. Fabulous!

All I have to do is find somewhere to get a 16Gigger and pay my way out of my current contract (£175). O2 shop said phone customer services, customer services say I have to go to a shop..... nice that they have their story straight then!

you can get one from Germany for £600 apparently. No clue why you'd want to, though - why not just go on O2?!

Try not to let it go much below 30%, just charge it until it says it's full. There really isn't a lot a faffing around to be done with modern batteries.

Just got my new iphone - i assumed local store near us was sold out but i got the last one on the 35quid tariff! Wasn't even intending to buy but couldn't resist!

anyone? It's down to just under half now.

Well, if it's anything like the V1, I had to give it a good overnight charge with the mains charger before I got a good run from the battery. I would expect this one is much the same. Mine is sitting at 1/3 after I've been browsing and playing with the GPS.

I'll give it a blast tonight.

Best way to treat the battery is to run it till it dies, then do a constant charge at least overnight then try and maintain this cycle throughout its lifetime.

Only reason ill buy a PAYG version is the GPS software as it would mean I could sell my v1 for about £200 and tomtom for about £50-80 so the upgrade wouldnt be too much I hope!

Got it activated now... why can't I set the phone to 12 hour clock mode? Its greyed out on 24 hour clock? Me not like 24 hour mode!

thats the same as the V1, something weird about how if you set your region format to UK it assumes you only want 24hr.

I've got mine set to New Zealand and the 12hr option comes back :)

Thats what I usually do with my new electronics. I want to use it this evening though, will it hurt to charge it up now for a couple of hours then fully do it overnight or is it not worth the risk ?

Well I have it in my grubby mits.

Trouble is, upon activation....

'We could not complete your iTunes Store request. The network connection timed out.'

blah blah

Servers down or something?

This is very good advice for a NiCad battery, but no one's used them since the 90s.

Unfortunately, this is very bad advice for a Lithium Ion battery. Best thing to do is keep it at 40% charge in the freezing cold, but that's not going to happen. Certainly don't let it run dead if you can help it. It can get so low you won't be able to charge it (although I expect there's circuitry to protect this). Charge it whenever you like - there's no such thing as 'memory' in Li-Ion. Eventually it will lose capacity (due to age, heat etc), but you'll be on iPhone v3 by then.

I tend to charge mine every night - it's just the easiest thing to do.

That's all well and good - but if the "full" charge it apparently had after being unboxed and sync'd for 10 minutes is anything to go by, then I'm taking it back right now as I've had roughly 1 /12 hours use to 3/4 of a battery...that's not right?

Guys - I am interested to know how iplayer works over 3g.. Can anyone give it a try - would be really interesting to see how it works.:)

I'm finding syncing contacts, calender and bookmarks is much MUCH slower with my new iPhone.
It used to take about 5 seconds for the iPhone to work out what had changed, and update it. It's taking 5 minutes plus with my new one.

Any ideas?

It wasn't fully charged. I'd imagine that indicator is slightly logarithmic - it'll display 'full' for something like 60%+, then drop. It's also going to have the correct voltage despite having sod all capacity. It'll be better after a full charge, but you can charge it when you like.

The LCD and WiFi are two of the biggest drains on it. Don't expect the battery to last more than a few hours if you're, say, watching a video on iPlayer.
