Im saving for a new car at the moment and have taken a fancy at the Toyota MR2's. I have taken a look at other cars but the MR2 seems a little different to your usual run of the mill. I know its rear wheel drive but i doubt that will be much of a problem, im not an idiot on the road and drive safely. I just want something a little fun and i really like my parents convertible (Audi).

Im 21 and will have 4 years no claims soon so that should help the insurance a little. I am looking to spend £6k max really, and by looking around you can get a decent 2000-2002 MR2.

Does anyone here own this car and could give me some feedback ? Things like reliability and running costs would be great. Parkers say it does 38mpg, so that sounds ok-ish if its true.

Thanks allot :)
P.s. i dont really like the look of the MX5 before someone sais get that.

they are supposed to be good drivers cars, shame they are so incredibly girly. Reliability and running costs should be very reasonable, that is the whole point of this kind of car.

Bit gay tbh, the mk2 is very nice though, but you wouldnt need nearly £6000 to buy one.

21 with 4 years ncb is a good position to be in, have you looked at Supra's (T top)? Toyota Celica's?

But compared to the MK2 it has no boot. I went on holiday for a week with my GF would have have no chance getting it all in a MK3.

This made me chuckle...I shall say no more :D

With regards to the mr2, I have a mk2 and it's a lovely motor.

They sound like great little cars, good handling etc just sooooo gay. I'd say that they're no more gay than an MX-5 though, and I like them. Just not too keen on that shape MR2.

Had one for two years - great fun - like driving an overgrown kart. No practicality whatsoever (assuming we're talking about the roadster here), two very small cubbyholes behind the seats is the only real storage space, although you could use the space where the spare is stored. Quite easy to get the back end out sideways, so be careful. Oh, and Toyos are probably the best tyre from a price / performance point of view.

£6k should get you a very good example - I got a trade in on my 2001 Full Leather / Hardtop / AC for about £4,500. Could have got more for a private sale, but couldn't be bothered with the hassle.

Now have an Alpina B3S which is even more fun, but costs a lot more as well!
