*** The iPhone 3G Thread ***

Sounds like you have a different issue then...was it O2 or Carphone Warehouse?

Probably it is a different issue, as I have been told that customer services will be calling me monday, and the sim wont get enabled until they sort out what has happened.

It has probably got something to do with the fact that I was able to walk into CPW hand over a post it note with my order number on, get the goods, and walk out. They didnt check any ID, didnt take any authorisation payment, I didnt get to sign anything and I didnt get any paperwork at all.

I turned around and drove back there after thinking about it on the way home incase they missed something. I was told that 'my order was finialised by the telesales guys and consequently they couldnt print out any paper work'.

I am guessing that my details didnt enter the system to be activated or something.

This was after a random cancelled order on Monday too with their stupid 'for security reasons'.

So far it has been a total mess from start to finish.

Has anyone who preordered with CPW got service yet?

I thought it was odd they didn't ask me for ID or take any further steps. What an almighty cockup.

Seems like it was moderately easy to get one out there!

White ones are easy to get here too....just buy them from the Apple Store.

All you chaps who wonder about ID etc, using a debit/credit card alone can serve as a proof of ID when purchasing a product. This is relatively new for Mobile Phone contracts.

O2 said to me that it was just pure high volume and they are trying to activate them all within 2 days. Just because they took your details over the phone doesnt mean they're activating it 'there and then' that was probably just your credit check etc.

When I bought my one from the apple store i was on the phone myself handing my details to the lady at o2, it did confuse me that they took the IMEI and not the SIM number, but I guess the sim number gets submitted through itunes when you first register it?

Ok got off to phone with O2 and CPW. The problem lies with O2's Gateway system. You don't have to register the SIM, service on your phone will happen when it's been processed (2-3 days backlog). A case of sitting tight.

Any recommendation for a cover? Was thinking of some of the shield film stuff. There is some stuff in CPW shop I saw that was £16.50. Covers the entire phone.

Either that or a cover like the Wii remotes have that I can stick on for nights out etc

well....at least we know its in their hands now, i was scared i'd have to go back to the store and kick off lol

It would have been decent to have this information up front, rather than having to ring round too see what's going on. The silence from CPW when they handed my phone over and me asking is that all I do, didn't fill me with much confidence.

Exactly, I thought everything was done in the store this time round including activation :/ seems some o2 reps believe that too.

Not true, it is a legal requirement for mobile phones that whoever bought it can return it within 14 days and only have to pay for the usage they had during that time.

It was brought in to stop high pressure selling etc.

nope. your refering to 14 day DSR (distance selling regulation) if bought in store and contract agreed to then unless the company have a seperate returns policy, then you dont legally have any rights. the original poster was bang on, and i know, i work for t-mobile.

This post made me think... Does one need the IMEI number or serial number from your original iPhone when upgrading to the new iPhone 3G. I've already sent my original away yesterday after failing to get my iPhone and waiting as long as ebay will allow for postage, this could be a problem :(

I thought you'd only need the SIM.

So I registered my iPhone with the new SIM, but my SIM for the contract I was on is still working (and is 3G-enabled). I told the saleswomen in CPW that I want to keep my number, and it has my "old" contract number as the number on the iPhone receipt. Is this going to be ported to the new SIM I registered with through iTunes, or have I ballsed-up massively?

Dont think you have to worry cheif, I was referring to the IMEI of the NEW phone, which I guess will link when you register itunes and they recognise it at o2.

Very quick question, as I didnt want to start a new thread for it:

Will an old mains charger (originally for a 3G ipod) work with the new ipod touch/iphone?

Im assuming it will, but I just wanna check :)

As long as this charger uses the USB way of charging rather than the firewire. I read in the gizmodo review that the firewire charging method does not work on the 3G.

Been away for a week and this thread has grown into a monster! Don't fancy going through 20+ pages and was wondering if anyone could give any info on the PAYG handsets?

When will they hit the shops and for how much roughly?
