*** The iPhone 3G Thread ***

In america everyone uses email. Apple does not really look past the USA market that much which is well just plain silly which is why the original iphone failed to penitrate in other markets until they cut the price right down.

But in reality every phone i'v had in the last 4-5 years has been email capeable. But a lot of the time its poorly implemented. People just need to realise email is just not somthing you do on the computer now. But phone companies are really trying their hardest to keep people using sms/mms instead of letting people move to email as 150 characters @ 12p a go is better than unlimited data @ £7.50 a month. Although its ultimately the future, it will be a long transition.

What sucks more than no MMS is not being able to bluetooth your photo's to your mates and not having AD2P audio! AD2P is great and would work really well with the iPhone, one of the only featues i miss from my HTC TyTN (WM). AD2P should be really easy to implement.

Is there a way to link up my Hotmail email to the little mail button? My Gmail linked up flawlessly and it's brilliant having it there, but it would be nice to access all of it.

Noticing a few limitations so far. As my last phone was a Nokia 7210 this is quite a technological 'step-up' in terms of phones, so i'm still amazed by all the little gadgets, but a few apple-esque things are common. Like when it works it works, when it doesn't you have no idea why, it just makes failing look good. Could not get 3G to work untill i accidentally switched it into areoplane mode and back out, it re-found the signal and worked fine.

Oh and iTunes not syncing individual photos but whole folders.. Which wouldn't be so bad if it let you delete the photos iPhone side once they've transferred.

Looks like Jailbreaking is still the way to go, sure it won't take someone much longer..

Reading the O2 website they say shipments will come in on a weekly basis. Now I have a right mind to call my local O2 and CPW shops in the morning to see if they are expecting any on Monday. Most likely they will not know and I will just have to erm....phone the shop every day or keep an eye on the O2 site.

I'm not sure how I'm going to actually get one now. Well at least i didn't have to wait in a queue for hours! ;)

Has anyone who had the 'No Service' problem still got that issue? Mine is still sitting here unactivated :(

Also, I noticed there wasnt a dock adaptor? Is there a proper dock for this? or will the Universal dock come with a correct adaptor?

Mine still has 'No Service', but I haven't had it 24 hours yet.

You have to buy the dock separately now, it's £19.99 from Apple.

Dont know if this has been answered yet, but anyone tried a different sim in theirs yet?

Any o2 SIM works. I've tried my PAYG one and it works fine. Other networks don't work though.

On that note J, could I use my simplicity sim in it, then try putting the iphone contract sim in there after a few days to see if it will activate it? I want to use it nowwwww!!!!!!#

edit - what im trying to say is will it mess anything (re: activating) up by using it on another o2 sim for a while

Yeah this is ridiculous, main reason i was put off buying one. How can a newly released phone not have an option to send/receive mms messages? lol

Friend of mine has third party applications on his iPhone v1 that allow him to MMS and record video, etc, etc. Basically do the majority of things that would typically put someone off buying it. I imagine once the v2 gets unlocked it'll be the same deal.

I know the dimensions have changed slightly, but do you know if the old dock fits the new phone? I've got the BT headset and it'd be a shame to have to get yet another headset just to get a dock that fits!

Sure it ought to fit - it'd probably work out cheaper for Apple to just keep manufacturing the same part...

I think the new BT headset is not being supplied with a dock either. Very strange move by Apple, the old set-up was very elegant. No idea why they have decided to change it.

Could someone just clarify if the HSDPA coverage map on the o2 website are the only areas where the phone will be 3G capable? Or is it more complex than that? Will i still be able to use the Internet in non-HSDPA areas?

I find this funny. It seems normal now for someone to unlock an iphone to get features you would expect to get on a phone in this day and age. Seems a bit crap imo, how will the average joe know to unlock his phone just so he can send a MMS.

Am I right in thinking it doesnt tell you when you make a text message that needs two messages to be sent (eg 200 characters)

That was the case in the last Firmware, I would imagine it is the same in the new one too. It's a little annoying and hard to judge, but these days most peoples phones will see it as one message.

In USA is push email or mobile email notication a standard? Only reason why I dont use email on my phone - no one will check it until they log into their email account whereas SMS/MMS instantly arrives and notifies...

Regards AD2P, I suspect Apple wont ever implement it - had the opportunity in the first gen and ignored it and doubt theyll change their mind. Dont understand it myself - Apples only interested in locking down BT to enable handsfree and nothing else - seems a distant memory to what BT was going to aspire to...

EDIT: Stupid question as I dont know much about jailbreaking - when you can do that am I right in thinking you wont be able to install (firmware) updates until those have been jailbroken? If thats the case how long could take per updates? Days, weeks?!?

ps3ud0

If people can't be bothered to load google and ask a question does anyone honestly care if those same people go around with stock iPhones? :)
