Question regarding this push email.

At the mo I have no service, due to the sim not being activated.

Should the iPhone be getting push email via wifi if all the mobileme stuff is set up? At the mo it only gets email when it does its 15 min check it seems.

Perhaps it needs a signal for this stuff to work. Praps a hidden sms or something to tell it to check for email?

EDIT: Stupid question as I dont know much about jailbreaking - when you can do that am I right in thinking you wont be able to install (firmware) updates until those have been jailbroken? If thats the case how long could take per updates? Days, weeks?!?

ps3ud0

Correct, you can update, but it will loose it's Jailbroken uses so other networks and Applications wont work!

No idea on how long it will take them to crack, the last few have been done in days and they have been getting very good at it. The Version 2.0 has many features to stop you from doing it, only time will tell.

Friend of mine has third party applications on his iPhone v1 that allow him to MMS and record video, etc, etc. Basically do the majority of things that would typically put someone off buying it. I imagine once the v2 gets unlocked it'll be the same deal.

Dont you have to mess around unlocking/cracking it though, which in turn voids warrenty?

The v2 software has already been jailbroken, a tool is expected to be released shortly. I assume if the V2 software can be jailbroken 3G phones can be too.

In USA is push email or mobile email notication a standard? Only reason why I dont use email on my phone - no one will check it until they log into their email account whereas SMS/MMS instantly arrives and notifies...

Regards AD2P, I suspect Apple wont ever implement it - had the opportunity in the first gen and ignored it and doubt theyll change their mind. Dont understand it myself - Apples only interested in locking down BT to enable handsfree and nothing else - seems a distant memory to what BT was going to aspire to...

Aparantly they didnt implement it because if "battery issues", to be fair it does drain the juice fast using it but i still want it! The iPhone is so good but its so locked down its putting me off a little. Ok only a tiny bit! This sort of things in reality will only put off the hardcore geeks and nit pickers.

Aparantly more people in america use mobile internet than in any other country (i read on Mac rumors somewhere), which to be honest i cant see that as being true as they have the worst mobile plans and 3G coverage. But in the USA you have to remember you have to pay for SMS send AND recieved which quite frankly is a joke. So it could be true. It would be interesting to see proper stats.

But its exactly the same reason why i dont use email more because others dont have it setup on the phones because hardly anyone has a data allowance. Only people i know have a iPhone or a WM phone i bother to email.

As I understand it (and Im no expert) you do need normal SIM service to use push email, I would have thought delivery over WIFI, GPRS or 3G doesnt really matter...

For push email you do need it setup to connect to an exchange server (most likely for corporate uses) or a mobileme account (which I thought was a yearly charge even on the iphone).

Please correct me as Im hoping to try to start using push email/contacts/calender for personal usage and push contacts/calender for work via Exchange...

So from what I understand, the cheapest way to get one of the iPhone 3G's is to trawl ebay for bargains? Seen a couple 8Gb around the £400 mark and there is a couple of 16Gb going for around £500 at the moment.

I currently have a contract with o2 so I would have no problem using my current sim.

What would you guys do in my situation? o2 don't provide any 3g coverage within nearly 30 miles of my house. That's the main thing putting me off the iphone. My other option is an N95 8gb on t-mobile. The t-mobile 3g mast is about 1/4 mile away from my house.

Well iPhone 3G is nice and i like the apps that i've d/l'd already for mine, but one things bugging me the o2 3G signal keeps dropping out. I'm not in a large built up area like a town centre either, my iPhone won't pick up the o2 sim service settings for some strange reason. Sold my old iPhone £205 not bad i guess for a 8Gb.

Depends, I wouldnt mind if it was similar for me as I'd want the 3g for when i'm away and out of the house.

So, being one of those that didn't get so lucky and haven't managed to get hold of an iPhone 3G yet - does anyone have any suggestions on where i may get lucky? I heard that an Apple store in London always has stock but im about a 2 hour drive away and have to work!

Ideally i want to be patient but it's not going to happen, just wondered if i was to try and get into the nearest O2 store tommorrow would it be worth it or are they not getting regular deliveries of stock...

Jesus Christ!! It's a Sunday for flips sake!! They sold them all on friday and someone has already made a webpage bitching about how it's not operational yet?! If this were any other phone brought on any other friday no-one would bat an eyelid if it took till Monday to activate it. I think that's one very severe case of taking it all a little too seriously..

Haha, yeah I saw this over at Mac Rumors, some people are so impatient

Okay everytime i unplug this thing (Or any other apple device - 2 other iPods do this - latest gen Nano doesn't though) it kills my motherboards wifi (Asus P5K-E). Doesn't matter if i properly eject or not, I unplug it and something freaks out.

It's only the new nano that has a little progress bar once you've ejected it from iTunes saying it's safe to unplug.. The wifi is fine in this instance. However with the previous gen video iPod and nano (And my 3G iPhone) they all kill it.. Have to end up bringing up the Wifi-Ap Solo program and resetting the whole wireless device.. Any ideas/one having the same problem?
