since bills have gone up a lot and are going up again. What sort of bills are we talking about for a 1bed flat.

Never have the heating on.
Only shower and usually only for 5mins
however laptop is constantly plugged in on charge
and main pc on for about 4hours a day

Anyone else have a one bed flat and can give me idea of bills.. Haven't paid bills for a while, as this place is inclusive.

Council tax = Whatever your area is, I pay £60pm
Gas = Haven't a clue don't have it, but at uni it was probably £100+ per quarter for a 7 bed student house.
Leccy = Pay £30pm for a 2 bed atm, 50inch plasma (5hours a day), laptop (2hours), leccy cooker etc, and a main pc on for a few hours. Energy saving bulbs all around.
Water = Don't pay this year :D
Internet = £28pm (Be + BT line)

Hope that gives you a little idea, Im sure there will be better replies from more suitable people.

Got to move in September. Trying to work out what I can afford, as I really would like my own flat. But I want to save a good chunk of my pay packet a month for a house deposit. House prices won't be going down for ever..

Unfortunately the two don't seem to fit together very well.

You still get 25% of council tax if you're on your own dont you?

If you can find someone to share I'd do it, I've just moved in with a mate and aside from the final bills/new bills big costs, it's going to be so much cheaper for me to live in a much better location than I was, in a nice flat. I've lived on my own for 2 years now and while I do like it, I also like not spending all my money every month

Use to live with my mate, till he moved to london. It was ideal. No other mates are looking to move, so unfortuantly that's a no go.

I'm presently living in a 6 bed house. Which was great, but has started to get annoying.

I will be looking at say a 2/3 bed house share and 1 bed flats/stuidos.

I can get a flat for about £450 but it's the council tax which is a killer. I expect even after 25% discount we are talking £120ish a month

Looking at my direct debits, I pay:

£24.99 for internet
£61.00 for council tax (inc. single person discount of 25%)
£26.50 for electricity
£11.29 for TV license (I believe it's higher for the first 6 months)

I pay my contents insurance yearly (£200 pa) and water is included in the service charge I pay.

EDIT: If you know the post code, it's pretty easy to look up the council tax band of the property you're interested in.

I was in a £400 flat, paying about £90 council tax and living comfortably on quite a low wage (15k when I first moved in) water wasn't metered which meant I paid significantly more for it than if it had been. Living comfortably included running a car, and going out quite a lot.

How do you do that?

for most one bed flats they're unlikely to be higher than band B (although you can get unlucky, especially with new builds)

Via this website. Whack in the address and it'll tell you what band the property is in.

My one bed flat is band B. Council tax bands don't seem to have much reflect on today's market values. The one bed flats in my block even now during the credit crunch are going for 4-6 times the council band valuation.

Rent £450
Council £72
Gas £30
Water £15
Elec £30
virgin £30
Tv Licnese £12

Does that sound about right?

Yeah I can easily live comfortably, the thing is I want to save around £500 a month towards a deposit.

IIRC my water bill was £25 for the last 3 months.
Gas DD is likely to be £25 month too, but bills will be very low in the summer.

i pay :(

£38 rent weekly
£68 council tax monthly
£20 line + bb talktalk monthly
£18 sky tv monthly
£40 electric monthly
