Sold with an aftermarket cooler for £50, I got another £50 and thats my budget for an upgrade, leaves me looking at the q6600 and the e6700 if i buy second hand, which one is better for gaming or is there something im missing out on a £100 budget tops?

For gaming, I'd say go with one of the E8x00 chips (so it's 5.74 over budget...), I'm waiting on mine now.

Edit: price cuts are supposed to be happening on the 20/21st, so i'd avoid looking at anything till then

get yourself an e8200 :). Mines running at 3.8 without a hitch at 1.29v 38-40 idle 56-60 load. Pushing for 4.0 atm.

Ah soon I will be the only one left on this forum using ye old E6300! :D

Your spoilt for choice for your replacment! :)

  • Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 (Wolfdale 3MB Cache)
  • Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 (Wolfdale 6MB Cache)
  • Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 (Wolfdale 6MB Cache)
  • Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 (Kentfield 8MB Cache)
  • Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 (Yorksfield 6MB Cache)
  • Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 (Yorksfield 12MB Cache)

wait till next week and checkout the price drops , should be able to get a better cpu then , even second hand ones will drop in price because the new ones are cheaper ;)

I THINK the E8420 is dropping £10, the E8400 --> £current E8200 (bugger all realy, £10 as well), so you're looking E8200 sticking strictly to your budget, E8400 for £5ish more. If youre not overclocking, the E8400 is a sound investement, seems to be a good choice for overclocking as well. I'll know tomorrow when mine arrives :p

Dont forget to add delivery!

It's not a clear cut choice, I'm kinda wanting a new CPU soon and although I am dabbling in a few things that would benefit from a quad-core it's still not 100% necessary i.e Video encloding still works well on an dual-core just slower etc

E8400 at around £100 looks like a good choice especially if it can be overclocked to 4.0GHz - 4.5GHz

Although I have seen some great overclocking results from the £200 Q9450 also running at 4.0GHz

Any idea when E8600 shows up in the UK?

no q9450 are going end of line

q9550 are dropping into the q9450 price bracket and the replacement for the q9450 is the q9400 with the same clock speed but less cache

yea the e6300 is did me good whilst i had it! got some nice clocks aswell ! (3.6ghz!) i would stay with it if all these price drops werent happenening, i mean you can get quads for less that £100! wtf! :)
