I don't get it. Why do they need him?

Deco, Ballack, Lampard - all go forwards as central midfield players.

Makele and Essien - there only defensive midfielders.
Makele - getting old and may leave soon.
Essien - I wouldn't want him in such a restricted role as a defensive midfielder.

So why not buy a Makele back-up?

As an Arsenal fan I want us to sign Barry as Gilberto has left.But with all of Chelski's money i am surprised they aren't buying him and getting rid of Lamps.

2006-2007: 21 goals, 16 assists
2005-2006: 20 goals, 10 assists
2004-2005: 19 goals, 16 assists
2003-2004: 15 goals, 7 assists

Why do Chelsea need to keep Lampard? Because he delivers.
 
in which case WHY BUY DECO?If Gerrard and Lamps can't play together..Deco and Lamps AND Ballack certainly cannot...

Makele would be left on the bench, and who know's where Essien would play?
 
Don't know why anyone has ever bought Deco, so can't answer that one really, but hopefully Chelsea will be all-out attack :D Be good to watch.

thats a good question, why did they buy deco? i hope one of the die hard chelsea fans can answer that one, unless they knew before the transfer window that Lamps was possibly off?
 
They do need him, however if Lampard insists on a 5 year £140,000 per-week salary than I would sell him, seeing as Deco and Ballack can easily take his place.

they have offered the same money for 4 years, whats another year?
 
I surprised they offered him as long as 4 years. I'd offer only a 3 year deal at most, although saying that neither Deco or Ballack are particularly young either.
 
Theres nothing to say Scolari will stick with the 4-3-3, with a 4-4-1-1 then deco or Lampard could easily play as a second striker with the other two as the central midfield pair, plus rotation play, Maka will barely be playing this season.

AS for why anyone would play Deco, don't know why people have suddenly started to assume he's crap, he's still brilliant and was very very good for Portugal in the Euro's but ultimately he's a provider rather than a scorer but he does that very well. Upfront Barca simply weren't fantastic this year, and Portugal, personally I've never thought Gomez was that impressive upfront, and with Ronaldo very quiet and Nani, Quaresma and Simao largely utter crap there was no one to score but he still controlled midfield very well and like Fabregas, keeps hold of the ball and retains possesion well very very rarely giving it away. He is very very good but as with many top players, after a few seasons people start to target how to defend them, often by marking the heck out of them for entire games hoping others won't perform.

Lampard has just proven year after year that he's worth 10-15 goals and 10 assists, and thats invaluable, thats what only the top 50 players in the world will guarentee.
 
Lampard is a great player but they can live without him.
With their money I wouldn't sell him, just let him leave on a free next season if need be.

We've gone here before but, deco had a good if not very good euro's and apart from last season has pretty much delivered for most clubs , in most occasions unlike some other attacking midfielder I could mention.

Thats not to say I like deco's simulation antics etc etc

who would you start - lampard or deco?


do you think either would be happy sat on the bench?
 
with Socalari as there manager I would have Deco and send lamps to inter where Jose can tell him how god he is blah blah. Italian footie would no doubt suit lamps game better now
 
Lampard is vital for Chelsea, he gets assists and goals every season and I think he holds the whole thing together perfectly and if the rumours are true and they let Makelele go, he'd be even more vital.

As much as I think he is overrated, Lampard when he can turns up he does his business in the PL, those kind of stats are good even for a striker.

he might play deco/essien in the midfield with lamps/ballack/cole supporting drogba (if he stays).

deco/essien have good work rate and distribution to feed the front players.
