Aftermarket Cooler For 4850

Are there any warranty issues with changing the stock cooler?

I won't be overclocking any higher than overdrive allows for the fact it seems you have to flash the bios to do so, thus invalidating warranty.

The stock one is fine at current overclocks, I'd just like something a little more efficient, and quieter for peace of mind.

As soon as it's changed, it voids your warranty.

Any overclocking, even if the program is provided by the manufacture also voids your warranty (correct me if I am wrong?)

You've got a choice of the S1, Accelero, T-Rad2, Duo Orb, VF-900 or Neo Vortexx. These seem to be the contenders at the moment. I went with Neo Vortexx after having the VF-900, I've had an S1 before and they take up a LOT of space.

Just an update on the Akasa Vortexx, been running it for a couple of days now on my 8800GT, absolutely no problem with not having any additional heatsinks fitted. Went through hours of Cod4 and Company of Heroes with flying colours. Amazing the amount of heat chucked out the back!

But if you keep the old one and stick it back on if it does die they won't be able to tell... unless there's actual physical damage to the core/board which is unlikely.

Well if they check properly, theyd realise the thermal paste isnt the preapplied stuff they have. Also, unless you keep the memory pads, theyll look different.

Keep the memory pads then. As well as some generic white paste, what they usually use (it'll be damn near identical if it's just cheap stuff).

Vortex not compatible with 4870 ?

My 4870 came today and well pleased with it. First thing I usually do is change the cooler. (I had no problem with Sapphire when an older card went faulty, I just replaced the stock cooler sent it them back and they sent me a new one) before overclocking. However with the card being new aftermarket coolers are a bit scarce and the compatible info is not too good. Reading this thread has helped a bit.

I was going to get the Akasa Blue Vortex cooler because it vents air out the back where the S1 does not. I thought the Akasa might be the cooler option due to this (btw I think the S1 is brilliant having had one before) It also gets a good write up in CustomPC mag.

So I emailed OC and got a reply this afternoon saying the Vortexx is not compatible with the 4870 ? Yet people on here seem to have used it ?

What gives ? Any thoughts.

Before my psu went I stuck my s1 revision 1 on there with a yate loon 120mm 800rpm fan and it was idling at 30c so I'd say get yourself an s1 for £14 delivered.

Go my S1 rev 2 today and all i can say is wow.

stuck a 120mm fan on it and getting temps at 34C with room temp at 26C. On load its gone up to 46C max so far at 700/1075 so lots of room for further overclocking.

Just found on this forum http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=64267 a way to edit the profile so you can set the fan speed of the 4870 to manual. Mine idles at 16% (via GPU-Z) so I set it to 50% and it sounds like a tornado but the temp goes down to 41c. Tried it higher and my PC nearly took off. Just goes to show that when the fan spins at a decent speed it cools the card fine. However its way way way too noisy.

Out of interest, what sort of temps would you achieve with an S1 and a 120mm focussed flow Delta on it?? :)

Obviously you'd have to wear ear defenders though.

Thinking about getting 2 neo's for my CF 4850 setup, just some questions..

Obviously the S1 + Fan appears to give the best cooling (And as seen in this thread with a trusty screw-driver u can get the xfire bridge through), would an s1 without fan be ok to clock up both cards to 700/1100 without any cooling fan? as space is a bit limited.
Does it come with all the required ramsinks and such for the 4850 card? or are more required?

As for the neo's, will the heat being extracted out of the case make a large difference to temps inside? ie: Can i expect my CPU Temp to drop a few degrees?

And what would everyone else reccomend? Really want it to be as quiet as possible.
Thanks in advance.

I'm in the same boat as it were. I've also got 2 x 4850 cards in Xfire but I'm tending to look at the S1 + decent fan cooling these two in preference to the akasa neo. I think as long as there is good airflow through the case, the hot air will be exhausted out the back, no probs.
Wrt overclocking, I think you'll struggle to get those clocks you're after. I think you're gonna need to flash your cards with the "MSI" bios that allows you to raise the gpu core and memory voltages a tad. can someone confirm this first please? My two sapphires are lousy clockers, even with the fans running at 95%, and temps well low, the highest i can get is 675mhz core/1125mhz memory, so this not a heat issue I reckon.
Also I don't think that the S1 coolers come with ramsinks, so you'll have to buy those separately plus a coupla quiet fans, especially if you want to overclock them.
Hope this helps.

Yeah ive already flashed to 700/1100 and to fix the fan speed, its just the god damn noise from the stock cooler =s its enough to drive you insane.

As for airflow, i have a 120mm intake at the front, and a 90 something mm intake at the front right side, i have a 120mm casefan positioned directly above the GPU's blowing air onto them. I have a 90 something fan above this at the top extracting air and another 120mm fan at the top rear removing air.

Atm with stock cooler im getting 64 degrees full load on the cooler card, and 68 on the second, so if i can reach anywhere near these temps with passive S1 cooling then im sold!

The S1 does indeed come with 8 little RAMsinks - but they're not very good to be honest - they tend to fall off.

My cards have been running with S1s on now since launch and no fans, and they're fine. They run a little cooler than the stock cooler, but obviously completely silent.

Have you got your cards overclocked by any chance mate? :)

Hehe :)

I would just like to counter dear WJA96 opinion about the included S1 heatsinks and say they are very good if you spend a few moments installing them correctly. I have read dozens of similar view about carp thermalpads so much so I actually paid out extra money for some AKASA thermal tape (costing me an extra £3.00). Anyway I had read another user saying the pads had stuck well as he did his prep so I spent 10 minutes giving the memory on the graphics card a good clean and made sure it was spotless!

Then with the memory surface clean and dry I carefully peeled the backing tape and pressed the heatsink firmly against each chip, maybe keeping the pressure on the single chip for 30 seconds to one minute (firm pressure not hulk rage!). The heatsinks stuck fine and have stayed stuck.

Thanks to everyone who said the heatsinks pads were carp as you cost me more money buying AKASA thermal tape that I didn't need to use :(

To anyone else intending on using the supplied S1 heatsinks, just make sure you clean the memory surface well and apply firm pressure for 1 minute and your good to go :)
