Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.
why would you want to invest in a stop gap?

Aren't these meant to compete with the 4850?
If so they're about £20 too expensive.

It was supposed to come in at July 16th. To be honest it's starting to look a lot like vapourware.
It was always August AFAIK.

I was just going by what I saw, if you have a link that says otherwise, it'd be appreciated.

I don't really view it as a stop gap card, as AFAIK NV don't have anything faster coming out at the £140 mark for a while. In fact I think there are very few stop gap cards that get released (maybe the 7800GTX 512 and some dual-gpu solutions), it's really a question of people buying their chosen card now, or choosing to wait.
They perform similarly to the 4850, but are more expensive, even in USD - $229 for the 9800 GTX+, $199 for the 4850, nVidia are positioning the 9800 GTX at the same price point as the 4850.
