So, due to total dental phobia, I haven't been to the dentist for years. I've been getting away with it but knew it would catch up with me one day. Sure enough, I got an abscess a couple of weeks ago and the pain and swelling finally drove me into the chair. I decided to bite the bullet (some sort of pun intended...) and get it all fixed. I need: 3 root canals with crowns, 5 extractions, 10 fillings and root scaling/planning on all of them. He's going to do it all in just 2 big sessions

On the plus side, I'm going for serious sedation - He's giving me Valium and Triazolam, then gas as well if I want it. Apparently I'll be totally out if it (fall asleep most likely) the hours will seem like minutes and I'll have no memory of it afterwards as the Triazolam causes short term amnesia :p

On the downside, he has 4 assistants - 3 totally cute girls and a large sweaty nerd guy. Guess which one I've got

Also, during the sedation consult they found my blood pressure was extremely high. Probably just because I was so stressed and full of caffeine, but now I've got to go to the docs for a full physical as well.

Just thought I would vent a little.

Good luck mate.

I was in the same position although he told me cos I needed so much work he'd do it over 5 or 6 appointments! I'm only in there for about 15 mins each time. Everytime my mouth heals he does something else.

Almost over for me though!

I should book in at some point, chipped the top of my front tooth somehow (?!) and need it fixed, its only really noticable if i smile hugely though.

Good luck.

I'm in the same boat.

Currently have an abscess so i'm taking amoxicillin (sp?) and i'm getting a tooth removed in 2 weeks :(

God knows what else needs doing.

Actually when I went I was expecting PAIN! but there was none! :) There will probably be some when I get the tooth removed though.

Even though I'll be under a local anaesthetic.

I havnt been to the dentist for 2 years...ever since i became old enough to pay! I dread to think what would happen if i went back

Jeez, 3 root canals, ive had one in my life and i live in fear of another, when he touched the nerve i nearly hit the ceiling, i dont envy you, still its your own fault for not looking after your teeth.

What lovely looking teeth you must have.

That's the funny thing - my teeth actually look very nice! All the problem teeth are towards the back. If I smile it looks like I have a perfect set of gnashers. If they looked awful it would probably have driven me to the dentist years ago.

FWIW dental sedation is awesome :D I can't even begin to describe the sensation of being conscious but not "being there". You don't care, and it's almost like watching TV while doing something else. Basically you're kind of aware something's happening, but not to you and you're not really that interested lol

Once it's over, you feel like you were in there 5 minutes tops but aren't quite sure what happened. An hour later you can barely remember being at the dentist at all - you just know you were

That's why they stress so much that you require a physically capable adult to supervise you for 24 hours. Your brain just goes AWOL and you have the attention span and memory of a fish. It's great though, and a few hours later you'll feel 100% normal... until an hour later and you can't remember THAT hour either :p

So yeah, don't worry. The worst part of a dental sedation visit is the injection. After that you won't give a **** either way. Have fun!

EDIT - Sorry. Reading that back, as someone who hates the dentist himself, I can see how that could sound worrying! When I said the worst part is the injection, that was a "compliment" believe it or not lol Just a lil jab in the back of your hand for the drug and after that you're in Wonderland lol I didn't mean to imply you have all sorts of dental injections and are aware of them :) I'm in the same boat as you, I have hyperplasia (teeth that developed weak) and my back teeth are a mess. I've had sedation already and am booked for more next month (I've had six teeth out by then grr). Seriously, even the most nervous patient has nothing to worry about with sedation, you'll be fine :)

I had an emergency appointment at the dentist today as I had a decayed tooth which the nerve was giving me so much pain. I didn't sleep a wink last night as the pain was the worse I've experienced and I've broken a leg in two places and ruptured an achillies!!

As I've not been to the dentist for over 8 years my teeth are in quite a bad way, which is down to my stupidity of being afraid of the dentist. Anyway, I've decided enough is enough and they need sorting so it looks like about 6-8 extractions for me, plus root canal work and cosmetic treatment too. Yep, it's going to be expensive and the new kitchen will have to wait another year but I just cannot wait to have a half decent smile. :)

So I got back from the dentist a few hours ago and it all wet really well. Took the first Triazolam an hour before but didn't really any different. They gave me another one once I was in the chair and waited. Still nothing. Third one went in. That was the last thing I remember :p I was in the chair for about 7 hours and remember only tiny dream-like images. Have no recollection of having teeth pulled or the root canals at all. The next thing I know I'm waking up in my apartment with the wife giving me chicken soup. I have zero pain and zero swelling.

Sometimes drugs are good, OK? :)

I've gotta have an abscess removed from either side of my mouth and six fillings (two re-done) some time in October, one is an hour and hour and a half, totally sedated...yey :(. Hadn't been since 1999 or so..

Having healthy teeth is incredibly important. They discovered it years ago on the battlefield when nobody believed this. People can't fight if they can't eat.

/SERIOUS MODE

Out of interest how much would something like that cost? I know one day I need to go get some work done but if it's going to cost a fortune I can live with it for a while longer.

I'm back to the chair again soon. One of my teeth fell to pieces while I was eating an apple. Bloody annoying as I'd only had it filled a few months ago. Now it will need a crown which is going to cost a packet.

Detal work annoys me because of the cost.

I pay for the right to use an NHS dentist via my taxes, but there aren't any around here that will take NHS patients so I have to go private and pay again.
I think I've spent about £5k on dental work over the last 5 years and I've not had anything major done. A couple of root fillings, a couple of crowns, 5 fillings maybe and a few descales and polishes.
