I'm seriosly thinking getting that Leadtek GTX280

If you can afford it get a GTX280, it is faster then a HD4780, this isnt a great place to ask about nvidia cards in general, the ATI bias meter here is off the scales.

100 pounds for only 10% of extra performance? Not worth it.

Oh and the ati "bias" meter is off the scales because they're offering fantastic value for money ;)

Wasting money for very little gains is hardly big or clever.

Guess what?

I have the money for a 280 in fact I have the money for two.

Guess what?

I also have sense and a Xfire mobo and can beat the 280 in performance and still save myself 50 quid.

the case is the best case, fits any graphics card you put in it.
name ONE card that doesn't fit in the case!

get 4870 and save £100 for booze

How can you spend £100 on booze? :O

Anyway, the 4870 is a fantastic card, only reason i'm going for the 280 is for folding, for gaming the 4870 is an absolute beast and truly one of the best things for this segment for a long time :D

To the OP, if you got the money go for the 280. It is the fastest and will give you bragging rights for a little while :)

Yes, the 4870 is better bang for buck, but thats for people who don't have the money to blow to worry about - like me :)

Similar to you, except things have been made less clear now the GTX280+ is due out late aug early sept

Same here, I said to myself, will see how good that 4870X2 is and then descide what am going with. And now that 280+ is due looks like yet another delay on my build.

I think that is all that is due though for a while. I mean, I cant see any new card coming out from either company contending for the high end other than another dual GPU card (which doesnt bother me if that is all it is).

Edit: On second thought I probably shouldnt say that :P.

Narrow minded as always, some users might not want two use two graphics card in their systems, not everyone has a motherboard capable, not everyone wants to contend with the disadvantages of using crossfire over a single card, some users might be quite happy to spend extra on a single card that offers better performance and more consistant performance then a HD4850 Crossfire setup, some users might not want to spend the extra on a second HD4870, some users might prefer the better cooler on the GTX cards which provides better temps and allows for some great overclocks, some users might want lower idle power consumption, some users might play Crysis or UT3 or other games which run quite a bit better on the GTX280.

Just a thought...

Shocky you make some fair points don't get riled up by easy. The 280gtx is a great card but it comes at a premium (yes it's significantly cheaper than launch) whether it's worth £100 over a 4870 is dependent on the user and their own factors.

What about the 18 months before the 4*** series was out, it was all nvidia and the gtx and ati were taking a hammering a lot more than nvidia are now.

Just because ATI have got a cheaper card, "better" bang for buck, doesn't mean every other thread has to have (in response to 288/260/4870/4850) :

"Get a 4870".

(usually followed by)

"+ 1"

And also followed by...

^^ "What he said"^^

Etc etc:rolleyes: it's not "much more" ££££'s to get THE FASTEST card, the GTX280, and with double the amount of memory.

Also, I hear a lot of users complain about stuttering on the ATI's (RAM perhaps)?, But usual responses from the Red Corners are "Do a format, get Driver cleaner" Is it seated right, whats your PSU? etc. Do ATI fanBouys not think it could actually be the CARDS fault?,

If an Nvidia GTX280 user even remotely complained of Stuttering.. yea I know:rolleyes:

Like i said the last 18 months have been almost all nvidia and some people seam to be threatened that people are picking the 4870 over the 260/280

Reason it was "all Nvidia" for the past 18 months, is because ATI just hadn't got a clue, the GTX8800 killed everything ATI could come up with. Now that ATI have "comeback" (and I'm glad they have for a a consumer POV:), it seems that Nvidia has to match ATI's price for all to be happy. Well, After about a month, The GTX280's has been reduced from the mid >£450's< to less then £270!! GTX8800's were selling for that not too long ago. I don't consider £270 for the single Fastest card - with 1 GIG ram Expensive at all. We're not comparing "like-for-like" here with the GTX280/4870 performance. The GTX280 is a faster card:) And likes Crysis better too;)

EDIT: I had ATI X1950/9700 pro> ("ATI's 8800")/9800 pro in my other pc's, and now back to the XT850 . I've spent 90% + with ATI, over the last 6-7 years, so no favouratism here. Was just making an observation thats all, that It (seems) more "Anti-Nvidia" around here than offering "sensible/ unbiased" answers:) Just an observation though!

I think his point is that most people (namely 4870 owners) are going out of their way to dissuade people from buying a GTX 280, despite the fact that it is the fastest, most feature rich (and with the least problematic drivers in my experience) card for those willing to pay the extra premium.

4870 is definitely great value but it's really not that simple there are other factors in the long term such as drivers/noise/physx etc. which people just neglect to mention.

This is what i have a issue with really,as it been all nvidia almost ever since the gtx rightly so and to say now it is all ati makes me laugh and anyone saying they pick the 4*** over a 260/280 are getting labelled a fanboy.
I am not saying the 280 is a bad card (in fact i rate it quite a lot now it is under £300)but most seam to go for the 4870/cf 4850 and save about £100/£50 and looking at the benches the 4870 seams overall just in front of the 260.
Until i upgrade my machine i trying to keep my 320.
