There's a pre-pre-pre release available that allows Vista Media Centre to recognise DVB-S/S2 TV cards!

This is fantastic news for anyone that wants to avoid shelling out for a Freesat PVR for their TV, or indeed anyone that wants to view freesat through their PC with guide and PVR features.

Bear in mind that this is BETA, but at least it indicates that VMCE is heading in the right direction.

excuse my ignorance

does that mean directly from an outdoor satellite into a tv card?

That is correct, and the TV cards in question are a lot cheaper than the Freesat boxes, partly because the boxes are newer and partly because the PC hard drive is used to record the HD signal rather than the box's hard drive.

For me this is fantastic news as it's by far the cheapest way to get HD TV, even though the channel array is currently fairly weak. Sports are the main things I'm interested in and HD TVs and Sky HD are just too expensive at the moment.

I'm waiting for Sky etc. to start broadcasting their HD signals for no extra subscription, as they may be forced to do now that Freesat is on the scene.

nice, now just need to find a dual tuner pci 1x or pci tuner card that would work with it - any suggestions :)

I believe that the main contender at the moment is the Hauppauge WinTV NOVA-HD-S2.

Is BBC HD the only HD channel they are broadcasting? What about ITV or C4?

I think ITV HD exists and C4 HD is coming, as are a few other HD channels with more to follow. Check the Freesat website for more information.

Trying this out when I get home tonight cheers! (Have a Leadtek DVB-T USB2 card which supports Freeview HD channels so will look forward to that but in the meantime make use of teletext/interactive and more features :D

Great find Robbie G. This is the 'Figi' update I've been waiting for. :)

Thanks for posting this.

I think I'll read that thread to see if my card is supported before diving in though.

This sounds like exactly the sort of thing I've been looking for recently.

Does it work with any DVB-S cards?

I'll need to look for a USB2 one myself, as I have no PCI slots available in my rig, only PCI-E. USB2 could be moved between systems too :)

Thanks for the news,
Vin.

MMMMMMMMMMMMM
So an approx £60 TV card would allow this to work, of course in beta form so not ideal but a lot cheaper than a Freesat HD reciever/recorder...

However.....
Beta and PC means headaches and a bit or work, why work when you soon could PLAY
Particulary take notice of the video @ 2:00, this goona be kickass...

Personally think id rather spend approx £70 on PLAY than on a PC TV card guys, but heck if you love farting about with PCs and find MCE worthwhile then be my guest...

Ok not everyone has a PS3 but for some this is another reason to possibly get one.
