Looks like Star Trek Online has been rescued!

Powered by the Cryptic Engine, Star Trek Online will be developed for both console and PC formats. With customizable ships and characters from the Klingon Empire and United Federation of Planets, ground, space and shipboard gameplay and unique options for player-generated content set in the Star Trek universe, Star Trek Online is the MMOG that allows you to boldly go where no one has gone before!

The official site is here.

looks great and im a huge fan of ST but something tells me this is gonna be an epic fail. I just cant see where character growth is gonna come from. In worlds like WoW, everquest, AoC etc they're not limited by lore, they can make up their own and because of the nature of the setting, you can involve magic as well as melee.

In ST, I doubt you'll be able to sustain much character growth unless its focus on modding your ships (where your ship basically becomes your character) and you salvage pieces for it by fighting others etc. But that will be severely limiting. You can't for example, have starfleet officers running around with +5 wis bracers, and +10hp boots and stuff like that. It doesn't work in this universe.

And with the ships, there's only so much you can actually do, I mean, what are they gonna have, 15 different phaser types? 10 torpedo types? 5 different shields , different hulls, maybe some novelty like a trading bar inside your ship or something but the only thing that will happen if they go down this route is 1)dilute the game 2)make it highly situational

Eve, Tabula Rasa and Anarchy Online all manage character progression just fine. The +5 wis bracers are still there, except now they're intelligence implants. The +10hp boots are bio augmented armour.

Use your imagination, it's not that hard to translate just about anything in a fantasy mmo to it's sci-fi equivalent.

I understand what you're saying but what im trying to say is, these things dont exist in the star trek world. The one that we watch, the one that we know. Eve, Tabula and AO didn't have lore which they needed to stay close to. ST does. So if you start introducing stuff like intelligence implants it starts to move away from the original universe and becomes just another rpg replaced with ST graphics and models. It loses authenticity.

Heh this does have potential to be quite cool... people manning different stations on a starship and then going to work. Could be fun... but messy.

However i won't rest easy until there is a modern Star Wars game released with DX10 graphics that allows me to pilot a ship in mass combat with the TIE-fighter flight model and physics, with the option for people to crew capital ship turbolasers as the hulking behemoths go along pre-defines flightpaths and circle each-other. Or man stationary turbolasers if you're defending a platform. If FPS style boarding action a'la Battefront II could be added on then great.

Shame it will likely never be released ocnsidering LucasArts are now a pale shadow of their former selves. :(

I fear the worst, that this will be a MMO-lite. Be a shame if true, I think there's more than enough room for a serious competitor to EVE.

itll probably end up as disastrous as that game people originally touted as the Bridge Commander sequel, Legacy or whatever it was called

Anyone :| ?

Guessing its this news piece on the home page

Cryptic Studios will reveal the first gameplay footage from Star Trek Online on Sunday, August 10, 2008, at the Official Star Trek® Convention in Las Vegas.

The presentation will be at 1:30 p.m. PDT in the Gene Roddenberry Theater. We will also have a webcast available for fans who aren't at the convention. Stay tuned for more details.

They seem to have changed the gameplay a bit from the last I heard about this:

You Are the Captain: Command your own starship as a Federation Captain or a Klingon Warrior. Outfit it with the systems that you need to make your mark in the galaxy. Customize your ship as you see fit. Recruit, train and mold your crew into an elite force for exploration and combat.

I thought that in order to keep the number of ships down to a sensible number, there would be multiple people on one ship ? Personally I like the idea that only guilds (or whatever they will be called) would have access to the largest ships and they needed lots of people inside to crew them. Single pilots should be limited to shuttle craft and small freighters.

Thinking about it though, it would be hard to give everyone on board a large ship jobs to do and might end up being a star trek themed version of puzzle pirates :D

Yeah that was the original idea behind it when it was being designed by Perpetual Entertainment. But then PE hit big financial problems and had to cancel their development on their other MMO (Gods and Heroes), and just work on Star Trek Online. Didnt help though and in the end they were liquidated and someone else picked up the licence for Star Trek Online
