I'm sure lots of people get given a crappy company laptop.

I did, so I jsut put up with it... After a while it became faulty it was the memory but because of the No swearing. Big Kev up way big companies work I was not aloud to replace it.. I got sent a new crapper laptop..

To cut a long story short I brought some faulty memory from ebay, installed it into the working laptop, it went back they sent a new crap machine, a week later I did the same... now I've had 3 faulty laptops in about 2 months so I have a really good reason to get cross at someone...

A few phone calls to my manager saying why do they keep sending me faulty machines and I cannot do my work and before you know it I've got a brand new HP c2d on its way to me!

sweet!

well its worse than that, but the story was getting 2 complicated... it was my girlfrields work laptop,

I wanted to

1) Stop her complaining about her slow laptop
2) Have a nice laptop to watch films on when we were away..

If she knew what I did she would KILL my ass!!

She want MAD at her it support when the last one went (some how :) ) wrong...

Still its a sweet machine im jsut reinstalling her crappy Corperate build with a new clean one... I dont want their crappy software all over it...

Also I got to sell the working memory I swapped out on ebay...

I'm not sure I should tell her even though she now has a nice new laptop as she has put up wit habout 2 months of faulty laptops...

Wrong forum to brag about tampering with corporate builds. The software is on their for a reason.

Next time theres a problem and if she gives it to her it support, if they are competent they would start asking questions, likely to be bye bye job (pending on her importance to the company). Well done.

you're 34.. buy a laptop

this'll be against her company IT policy, she could lose her job.

..and you're admitting to theft.

well done there.

I like how you single out a specific member when most posts say the same thing.

If I'm reading the first post correctly then you sound like a grade-a ****. They're company laptops, to do work on... Not for you to watch films and mess about with. :|
Just to make sure I'm understanding... YOU swapped out working memory for memory you knew to be faulty?

Sigh, I didn't even notice this bit.
You're a disgrace, hopefully you'll pay the price soon enough.

You're pathetic. You did all this behind her back?

really not a clever thing to do to be honest, but hardly worth everyone getting worked up over.

Most companies are giving out decent laptops these days I thought, I had my new HP workstation a few weeks ago, weighs a bit more than I'd like but really blistering quick...

What if this all escalates and your GF loses her job? That'd be awesome... :|

I imagine there are plenty here working in IT who have to deal with the faulty laptops that are sent back. If we ever got any laptops back here with non standard components we'd know about it, there'd definately have to be further action taken.

hmmm .... so when she takes the laptop back into the office and plugs it into the network and the rebuild gets her in trouble as the asset management systems sound off about there being an unconfigured device on the network that's missing all their corporate monitoring software, antivirus (*) etc will you be supporting her whilst she looks for a new job?

I'll rant about the poor software stack on my work machine as much as the next guy but I'm not screwing around with the things on it which would get me in trouble ...

And she'll be really happy next time she has a problem and IT's only response before they will look at it is to reimage it back to the coporate standard build.

(*) our login scripts check the version of antivirus we are running and whether its up to date ... you are putting on the specific enterprise version they use with their serial number arn't you?

GSK are dire, got 3 dead lappies here for over a month, they just don't care on the phone.

We're HP here, but I don't like the build quailty of the laptops, the Workstation laptops even at 2k are flimsy, and feel cheap. Dell's feel really well built.

Nope, last I heard I might get a replacement for my dog slow D610 sometime in the second half of 2009 .... but not to count on that ...

To be honest I'd prefer a 22" LCD to replace this 19" CRT before that at the moment but that won't happen ....
