So, I've just had a bit of a strange conversation with my housemate. He's 22, just graduated with a masters in Chemistry and has no booked himself an appointment at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth for a consultation on a possible kidney donation.

It's took me a bit by surprise. Apparently it's something he's wanted to do for a while and is happy giving a kidney to a complete stranger. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against donating a kidney but I feel it's a big decision not to be taken lightly. He seems so content about it like it's giving blood or something.

If it was a loved one, I wouldn't bat and eyelid, I'd be on the operating table in a moment, but I'm not sure if I would be so willing for a complete stranger.

So any thoughts? Would you do this? http://www.uktransplant.org.uk/ukt/...ng_kidney_donation/living_kidney_donation.jsp

Wow, seeing that he's graduated in Chemistry, I'll assume he knows he won't grow a new one!

Crikey, was expecting this to be a 'would you mind if your organs were used after you died..' thread

I don't think I'd give one away while I'm still alive but, being a biker, I am on the organ donor list in the off chance that they find something useful amongst the crumpled, smoldering remains of me and my bike :p

If he doesn't drink then it's probbably not going to affect him too much. But he's screwed if he busts the other one :o

I like redundancy, I want a second heart :p

Well i used my redundance when i was younger :(
So i presume he thinks he isnt going to need it at any pint, well its very good of him and good luck to him for it!

I quote: "It's like a blood donation but a little bit more" Quite frankly, I think it's quite a bit more, but he doesn't drink and seems otherwise healthy.

Maybe just seems a bit of an overblown gesture? Saying that, on looking at the website, I wouldn't say that I wouldn't at least consider it.

The first thing that came to mind upon reading the thread title was the OP requesting someone's organ. Details in trust for those willing.

I seriously respect this chap, do tell him for me.
I can't give blood as i'm a pussy when it comes to needles.
But i've always been an organ donor - they can take anything of use from me when i die!

Not a chance, not for a random person. What happens if my remaining kidney fails. More importantly surly you would have to watch what you drank and other such things.

Agreed. For a family member, no problem.

I'm on the bone marrow register, I'd do that for a stranger.

I'll donate any and everything after my death, but I don't know if I'd donate a kidney to a total stranger while I'm still alive.
