Aftermarket Cooler For 4850

If I am not mistaken, in Xfire, the top card with an S1 will need to be passive wont it? For space issues

So passive IS an option? Hoorah! :D
Also I was under the impression the s1 came with sinks for the ram, but the VRM needed more!

EDIT: ahhh... I see the new s1's are supposed to include the VRM sinks, can anyone confirm that current OcUK stock includes these?

ive just put my akasa vortex cooler on my 4850 without any heatsinks on the VRM's.... it as made a big differents. 38c ida, 52c load thats with an overclock at 700mhz core. with the stock fan i could only get to 670mhz core.

This is a question I'd like to know, don't want to order the S1 until I'm assured it's the newer stock.

krooton, did you read this thread? :)

342 posts is a very small thread, you wait till you gotta trawl a 4000 poster!

:p

But the S1 only performs better than the Vortexx when a fan is attached, so if Xfiring, the Vortexx is a better option, lest you have a very toasty top card.

and yet id rather pay the extra for this:

Not to scaremonger or anything but I had two HIS X1950PRO's with a very similiar cooling set-up and my fans started *rattling* after a few weeks use, some users fixed this by adding a little blob of blue-tec to the fans hub. Put me off using the HIS ICEQ style cards now. Maybe it's been well and truely fixed now but just thought I would mention it.

The S1 I received had the long strip VRM heatsink from O/C and the individual RAM heatsinks but the VRM heatsink is only compatible with some cards. It needs modifying to fit the 4870.

I'm in the same boat with the HIS card, my x1950 fan is terrible in terms of silence, changing the fan speed or bluetac won't stop the rattle, wouldn't touch them again

1. I found it tricky, exponentially so compared to the Vortexx
2. Thankfully, the 4850 doesn't need it, I would do the same as you though if I had the 4870
4. Did in my case, as I got the Vortexx 2 weeks after my 4850. Ambient case temps dropped 6 degrees and cpu temp 3 degrees after the switch when doing 2 runs of Vantage.

Both cooler have their own pros and cons, people should just pick whichever ticks the boxes they want. :)

installing the Accelero S1 is childs play, no offence but anybody who thinks otherwise perhaps hasn't changed card heatsinks much?

yes they're both good solutions, pick your poison :)

I've fitted an Arctic Silencer to a 9800 and a X1800XT, a generic cooler to a 6600GT, the S1 and my current Vortexx.

The S1 was by far the most annoying to fit. If you consider it child's play, then the Vortexx could be considered to install itself :p

OK so, for whatever reason, I'm unhappy with my Vortex Neo.

If I fit an Accelero S1 do I need anything more in the way of heatsinks over and above what I used for the Vortex?

What is the best type/way of attaching a fan to the S1? For fan type, I do want a basically silent running one. Do people usually attach their S1 fans to a mobo header/PSU molex or can they attach to the header on the 4850 itself and use the BIOS fan profile?

Thanks...

How are people going about cooling the VRM's on the 4870 with the long S1 cooler?

I'm in two minds as to chop of two fins and drill a new hole or to just have half a screw overhanging the edge (a mm or 2 away from SB heatsink).

Any other ideas?

use the stock heatsink ;) just remove the blower fan, the core heatsink and the plastic surround and you are sorted, dont need to chop off anything :D

tbh heatsinks on the VRM's isn't needed really.... on my 4850 ive got an vortex cooler on it without any heatsinks on the VRM's and its running fine.
