Just been reading this article on the BBC about 'flat-earthers'
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7540427.stm

It amazes me that there are people around who are convinced the Earth is still flat.
Even if they think that photos from space are false, how do they explain things like the seasons - even the fact that it's night over the other side of the Earth when it's day here?
Surely people can't really be that ignorant?

What do they say to REALLY simple stuff like the fact that you can drive and fly around the world, and that to go to somewhere like Aus you can go either way round? What about satellites which orbit every few minutes?

What a weird article.

its time and day that confuses me.

ok so say its 12pm here, 5am in america, what then? where does asia fit into it? I mean do they go back a day? forward a day? because sweden is an hour ahead, russia is a few hours more ahead and then some to the east of russia!

Have these people never been in a plane?

There is one simple, observable phenomenom which discredits flat Earth theroies at a stroke; the horizon.

And what about the fact that no one has ever fallen off the edge of our supposedly disc-shaped world?

Mr McIntyre laughs. "This is perhaps one of the most commonly asked questions," he says. "A cursory examination of a flat earth map fairly well explains the reason - the North Pole is central, and Antarctica comprises the entire circumference of the Earth. Circumnavigation is a case of travelling in a very broad circle across the surface of the Earth."

What? That doesn't explain a sodding thing. If that theory is right then if I consistently go South then I should be able to reach the end of the disc not loop back round to the other side.

I just don't understand how they could possibly explain something such as the 2 common flight paths to Australia, which go in opposite directions from London. Loads more examples but that seems to be the most obvious one.

I don't believe for a second they actually think that it's true, in as much as the guy who turns upto a star trek convention dressed like spock really thinking he's a vulcan.

Mr Davis now believes "the Earth is flat and horizontally infinite - it stretches horizontally forever".

Does this person seriously think he will be taken seriously... ever?!

Its almost if he hasn't given a single thought before making this sort of statement.

What about all the photos from space that show, beyond a shadow of doubt, that the Earth is round? "The space agencies of the world are involved in an international conspiracy to dupe the public for vast profit," says Mr McIntyre.

John Davis also says "these photos are fake".

Only one word describes these people, idiots.

Its a joke, it has to be, saying that though........... a large amount of earths population believe in a random entity that created us and everything, despite huge amounts of overwhelming evidence to the contrary .

So yes I guess some people -can- really be that dumb.

love the thread title... wasn't that on QI the other night? Anyhows the timezone thing is a good point. If its a flat disc then why is say America in night when were in light?

but then i guess this is just the ultimate conspiracy theory!
