2008 Hungarian GP - Race 11/18

Even Damon Hill did a better job today than him and actually I found his commentating quite refreshing and new! Its nice to have a drivers perspective (not to mention a champion ;)).

I actually thought it was a good reminder of how good Brundle is at commentating. Obviously he's had more practice, but he sounds like a pro when compared to Hill.

Also, I missed the gridwalk. Louise and Ted's snippets just don't cut it.

One of the things I absolutely can't stand is when they cut to an interview during the race.
It's alright to have the interview in the background and still have the racing on but when they cut to pictures of Louise and Nick Fry... WHY??

Yeah that's a bit annoying, but what I found even more annoying is how during the Silverstone coverage they would keep cutting to Gordon Ramsey in the McLaren garage, it was ok to show him before the race but his face is the last thing I wanted to see when they were actually racing.

They're aiming at the mass market not F1 fans

.

Harsh comparison imo - Brundle has been doing it every other weekend for the last..... 6 years or so (give or take)

Hill has done it for two years at one race each year - personally think it was a good commentary if JA didnt keep on interupting him

How many times did , JA and all the rest say LH dropped to 12 when it was only 10th (well certainly thats what McLaren was putting on the pit board)

Harsh luck on Hamilton - luck just wasnt with Ferrari either (usually when something like that happens it would be fatal for nearly any other team but Ferrrari are able to manage it to get over the line, so a kind of refreshing change that they lost a win from that kind of thing)

If LH was in a Ferrari the tyre would have burst just before the pit entrance :)

Hope Massa can come back from the huge disappointment - not so sure he can

Kimi was the luckiest of anyone of the top three, yes he drove very well for the last....10 or so laps but otherwise was a forgettable weekend

Timo Glock was phenomenal and good luck to him and Toyota (although I do lean towards preferring Honda rather than Toyota)

I don't think Button regrets his win at Hungary when he "lucked" into it as well.
.

No way is that a similar comparison - Button won fair and square on that day in very tricky conditions, not at all the same to two people dropping out ahead of him like Kovi

Haha! One of my favorites was when he asked Damon Hill about the clear strips on the visors...

"How important is it to have clear vision in the car, Damon?"
Damon: "Erm... well, it always helps to see where you're going."

 :D
LOL

Yeah, I threw my crisps at the TV at that one. I really hope JA was cringing after saying that.

Not trying to discredit Massa but surely something happened over Sat night for Hamilton to loose so much pace on both types or tyre, he (LH) could only just about keep up - yeah there where a few laps where whole chunks of tenths where lost, but they were probably traffic most of the time - I dont recall tv pics being conclusive though

Was it just McLaren (still) over using their tyres in race conditions esp during hot weather?

The other (IIRC) was JA asking how to keep someone behind you from overtaking, Hill replied "Well first of all you need to go as fast as possible".

Haha, that was priceless. Another reason I thought Hill did an excellent job of commentating - these little fast quips show a good sense of humour and character; and shows that JA really has no charisma or personality at all.

They're all good but the "whafer sin" comment complete with John Cleese fake French accent to describe the margins in qualifying had me in stitches.

Well Massa did say after qually that he made a driving error which he blamed for only starting 3rd on the grid. So I suppose, if true, that he could have got it on pole.

Massa out-dragged LH by using his slipstream. To be honest if LH had been more aggressive at the start the whole race could have gone differently (providing he didn't get a puncture!!) But that's chaos theory isn't it ;)

LH didn't seem to carry too much speed into turn 1, not sure why. I think he was being quite conservative.

The good thing is that I think McLaren and Ferrari are very equally matched now. Whereas earlier in the season Ferrari had a clear edge at most tracks.

Very very lucky to get the win, but a win is a win. You take the rough with the smooth, so I take nothing away from him.

This is exactly the sort of performance required from the No.2 driver at McLaren. Remember, he doesnt need to be able to compete against Hamilton, but should be able to pick up the pieces if/when his team leader has an incident. His job is to keep a watchful eye from the back and if anyone ahead (including Hamilton) has some bad luck, he needs to pick up some major points. For the first time, this is exactly what he did, hence, he drove well.

As a team boss, I would have no complaints from him, given that only Massa and Hamilton would've finished ahead of him. So, on merit, he wouldve finished in 3rd, which is where you expect him to be.

Hamilton
He was unlucky to miss out on 2nd place, however, he was running in 2nd place, had a puncture and still ended up extending his lead. This was a good weekend for Hamilton and he cannot have any complaints.

Massa
Extremely unlucky. The guy must feel very dissapointed to lose 10pts like that, but thats just how it rolls, but he should be glad that Hamilton and Kimi didnt score 10pts. Its interesting though, as for the first time in a long time, Kimi has now moved ahead of Massa in the WDC.

As I stated a few days back, the championship is not over and any one of 3 drivers are favourite to win each race. I would certainly not say that Hamilton is favourite to win every race he goes into. JRS does not agree with this, but IMO, McLaren and Ferrari will each have tracks where their cars will be better suited, with no car dominating totally.

There will be a 3 week break now, but when we return we shall see if Kimi can rekindle his form and if Massa can come back all guns blazing (like he did earlier this season, when he had 2 DNFs).

Alright... whos Gavin Wilson :D? AKA "gav" on this particular grand prix forum :)

Hes been posting on another forum comments made of mostly my quote :D

Hmm, personally, I thought they were particularly bad.

I wouldn't normally do this, but meh, I'm bored:

ITV warning (comments from another forum for the sake of it):
"GET OUT OF THE MCLAREN GARAGE AND GO AND TALK ABOUT SOMEONE ELSE!!!"
"Senna mentioned already. lol"
"The only good bit about this is its nice to see Damon again."
"Why has Ted Kravitz not been fired yet? He's absolutely rubbish."
"Theres your air of invincibility James Allen, I wish you'd stfu."
"Classic JA quote a few minutes ago - "If Kimi can get past Alonso, he may be able to progress". ORLY"
"God listen to Allen, hes totally trying to justify the lack of Hamiltons "air of invincibility""
"Can someone hold Fathead down for me, while I jump on his head."
"OH MY GOD STOP SAYING AIR OF INVINCIBILITY!!!!"
"Makes a change from mentioning Senna every 2 minutes I guess."
"Oh man how dense is Allen. Its NOW 4.3 secs you dimwit!!!"
"HAHAHA listen to him :D now over correcting :D"
"LOL @ James Allen there. "LH is ON THE MOVE!" then immediately as he says that Massa increases his gap by about .4sec."
"Can't wait for BBC coverage. If they employ allan i might demand the refund my TV license."
"ARGGHGHHHH AIR OF INVINCIBILITY AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
"Air of invincibility... Why? Stop saying it!"
"Can someone enquire about James Allens lack of sensible commentary?"
"Boom wheres the air of invincibility now!!!"
"It looks like he's got some dirt on that front left tyre" - "I think it might be a puncture - "IT IS, OMG IT'S A PUNCTURE!!!"
"Go Go Messiah™"
"Senna-esque performance by Hamilton."
"God now James is trying to defend Hamilton."
"Pendulum swung to Ferrari? FERRARI WERE LEADING YOU MUPPET!"

One post that just made me laugh:
"Somebody got overexcited all over Bourdais car"

Couple of things they never even noticed:
- Glock's ridiculously long first stop with the refuel hose having to be swapped
- Trulli pitting with them claiming it was Glock's 3rd stop (despite him being on a 2-stop strategy) with Trulli's name on the caption...

:D

Wonder how much the pro commentators miss if thats all we did? ;) They are generally behind us anyway :p

ps3ud0
