Hey all,

I've been wondering about an upgrade for a while now, my pc is pretty well specced but i thought it was time for some real top end components. I'm going to get a velociraptor - probably 74gb, but possibly £150 (I know it's expensive for the size, but it's one of those things i just want!), ill just stick vista and a few demanding games on the velociraptor then use my current HDD (320gb) for storage.

I'm also going to get a 4870x2 when they appear (mid this month is the latest I've heard (from ocuk)). question is, will it be compatible with my p35-ds3r, and will a StealthXStream 600w be enough to power it along with two hard drives?

Also, does anyone have any idea what these cards will retail at when they first come out?

Cheers

they rekon they will be £425 and your mb will work fine not sure about your psu

IMO, If your mobo is crossfire I would just get 2 4870's instead, unless you plan to go 2 x 4870 X2's lol.. You will have to either buy a better PSU or you could do what other forum members have done and I'm doing and buy yourself a Thermaltake PurePower 250w device to power the other 4870. You'll get the same performance as an X2 right now for £340. And if the 4870 X2's are really going to retail at £425, you'll be saving yourself a good wad of cash.

Your getting 2GB of DDR5 with the X2 though. and only 512MB with the basic 4870

Anyone selling the X2 for £425 will only be showing they have a massive sense of humour it won't be that much at release unless there is some massive gouging going on. My bet for it's price will be £350-360 max on release dropping to £320-300 after a couple of weeks anymore then that for any length of time i won't be buying one as thats a stupid price to pay.

release price .. they will have to drop that

Thing is though Ati\Amd have said price will be $549 so how that equates to a price of £425 can only be by price gouging. Also it would take away the biggest thing Ati have which is their bang for buck advantage and that has been very important to Ati. Maybe it will be that exspensive but given it would then make it cheaper to buy two 4870's and xfire i can't see Ati being that stupid unless were saying they are going to raise the price of the 4870.

That article has been linked a lot for price info. The quoted price is in Euro's though, and quick conversion shows it's around £345?

who no`s till realease . but it gives a idea on that day i bet the 280`s drop no way will we no about price due too this

I don't think their is much point in crossfiring 4870s on a p35 board, the second pcie slot only runs at 4x, which would limit the second card.

you guys are forgetting to add vat and greed tax to those numbers.

we always get ripped off in the UK.

No we don't. I've said this a million times before, we get the same prices as the US, Plus VAT.

HD4850 $200 we get them for £110 which is less than $200+VAT

HD4870 $300 we get them for £170, same again, less than $200+VAT

If ATI/AMD keep to their promise of not producing anything that costs over $500, then the max price of a 4870X2 will be £299 including VAT.

So called rip off Britain, we will get things for cheaper than some European countries due to our lower VAT percentage.

UK VAT = 17.5%

Germany = 19%

Now greed, yeah, we all know how OCUK love to price gouge to the max, but we shouldn't use their prices as the gauge.

We should use the RRP or the US price + VAT, that way, we aren't making references to competitors, but simply keeping to the price the goods SHOULD be.

were did u found that ? 433 euro in germany inc vat thats 343 quid

£343 with price gouging most likely. Based on the 4870 release and the horrid price gouging going on then, what was it? £60-70 max increase?

It's safe to assume that we'll easily get them for sub £300 when the greed shops decide to subside their gouging.
