UPDATED: Seems i'm not alone with this crashing problem! with all these people on AMD's forums. And quite few in this thread getting it.
Please post in this thread if you have this problem, especially if you have Vista (even more so if it's 64-Bit) and/or dual monitors as it seems to happen a lot with this setup.
The Problem:
I kept getting a black screen for a couple of seconds with my 4870 on Vista 64-Bit, now with the 4870X2 (but it's way less) then when it recovers i get the old "Display driver stopped responding" message. But sometimes it will go in to a continuous loop, or sometimes just BSOD. The cause of the crash is "atikmdag".
This mostly happens with games, but it also happens on the desktop, and even when idle. Basically any time the GPU is being used theres a chance of it happening, so being as Vista's Aero uses the GPU it also happens on desktop.

Stuff so far tried :
8.6 + Hotfix
8.7 BETA
8.7 final
8.8 BETA
8.8 final
Tweaked 8.7 drivers.
Installing just the display driver with no CCC.
Disabling a monitor.
Physically unplugging second monitor.
Disabling Aero (will stop it happening on desktop, but not in games)
Underclocking card.
Flashing BIOS to Asus TOP BIOS.
Used a MultiMeter to monitor PSU voltages (all fine)
Tried different RAM.
Tried system all at stock speed.
Changed the PCI-E speeds in BIOS, and tried disabling PCI-E Spread Spectrum.
Tried many different voltages within BIOS on different components.
Reinstalling Vista x64, with nothing else installed, just SP1, latest DX version and ATI drivers. (i've done this atleast 3 times, including on another computer)
Tried Vista without SP1 installed.
Tried the 4870X2 in a completely different Quad-Core Vista 64-Bit system - still happens.
...nothing works! And a 8800GTX, 9800GX2, GTX 260, GTX 280, and 8500GT all work fine in the same system(s).
So for anyone else who has this the only thing you can do is get a different card, or hope a driver fixes it soon (unlikely as this problem has been around since Vista's release with ATI, but people with 4xxx cards seem more likely to get it).
