Anyone have a D3?

Thanks for that, a bit more food for thought!

It seems most things in photography are about compromise. There doesn't seem to be one camera that does everything better than anything else!

lol, the D3 is a cracking camera. The amount of folks i've seen walking around covered in brand new Nikon gear, specifically D300s and D3s is countless. And its for good reason.

Its a great time for Digital photography, theres so much great kit being sold, you can't possibly be dissapointed unless you sit around all day comparing lenses with lens charts stuff no one really cares about :p

Well yes, that's true enough!!

So, what I really want is a camera with the D3's low light performance, and the 1d's 'normal' ISO range performance?! :)

Does it exist?

Also the AF in low light is superb, alongside the high ISO performance. Also, the amount of information the D3 files captures in 14bit mode allows for some serious revoery if everything goes wrong!

Thanks for all the feedback, think I will hold fire until the D700 is available and then give them both a try. Leaning towards the D3 at the moment as had heard that the D700 is missing a few features (cropping the sensor for DX lenses amongst them) and I've already got the D300 if I really can't deal with the extra weight for a particular situation.

The D700 has the DX crop feature. AFAIK the main things you loose are the higher FPS, 2x CF card slots and the 100% viewfinder. You gain built in flash & sensor cleaning. The D3 sensor is supposed to be a dust magnet as well.
Great value at the moment though.

Yep the crop is still there, just the viewfinder doesn't mask out the unused area as it does on the D3, but its a non-issue if you don't have DX lenses anyway!

D700 looks to be a great camera thats for sure and superb value IMO! I'm curious to see what the D3x brings to the table but I'm tempted by a D700 as a backup.

I didnt think it had the 5:4 crop mode but could be wrong. I have these lenses at the moment (all nikon apart from the 10-20 and 120-300) and would keep them as I won't part with the D300.

105mm Macro
50mm 1.8
85mm 1.8
17-55mm 2.8
70-200mm 2.8
10-20mm Sigma
120-300mm 2.8 Sigma

So bit of a mix, will add the 14-24 and possibly the 24-70 then maybe look at a prime 300/400mm in the future.

So your only DX lens is the 17-55, and if thats to be replaced with the 24-70 (supposed to be an amazing lens, I'll be upgrading my 28-70 for one eventually) I wouldn't worry too much about auto cropping viewfinder :)

EDIT: Sorry the 10-20 is as well isn't it! Worth keeping them though if your sticking with the D300 as well.

Well either you or the Nikon website are ;)

double checked and the D700 definitely doesnt have the 5:4 crop (this is different to DX lens crop)

Still think it is the right option for me though as won't miss that feature much and I can sacrifice the fps for £500+ :)

D700 and 14-24mm lens will be here tomorrow :)

now I just need to hide the D300 and the missus might not notice the difference.......

Great stuff, looking forward to seeing some shots - the 14-24 is supposed to be very very sharp indeed!

(just don't post shots that are too good as I'm not sure my wallet can take the hit at the moment lol)
