nVidia or ATI

I can do that with my 8800GT!! A 4850 will be plenty for 1280x1024. If you want more power (not needed though) get the 4870. A GTX280 will be totally wasted as will crossfire.

At last, someone actually reading the thread. I can't believe how many people have read the resolution of 1280x1024 and still advise on the X2 4870 and GTX 280. The mind boggles as that would be a total waste of a graphics card. If the 8800GT can handle 1280x1024 with all the bells and whistles on then why are people suggesting cards that will be CPU limited unless you're hitting 4Ghz (roughly) and if one 4870 , even 4850 would be more than enough then what use would a second 4850/70 be or even the GTX 280?.

Well they would still be better, games aren't necessarily CPU limited all the time and those cards would pull ahead in heavy action scenes, i have no doubt about that. I wouldn't get anything over a 4850 though :)

No, I agree. The CPU limiting I'm talking about is regarding the releasing of the full potential of the card. Sorry if I made it sound like the CPU wouldn't be good enough to run any games as it wasn't meant that way. :)

Hehe no problem, glad we agree that there is no point in the overkill suggestions :) Espically with the fantastic ~100£ cards we've been seeing ever since the 8800GT popped up, it's a great market right now :D

lol Aye. I don't want to see graphics wasted either :D. Yeah the market is absolutely riddled with great cards at great prices. Thanks to ATI the GTX is now at £260 which is amazing from the £400+ entry pricing we all seen.

I'll be jumping back to ATI soon with the single 4870 or the X2 at most but I'm just going to wait and see first. A family members car just failed it's MOT (quite badly) and I'm helping out with the cash for the repair so the funds I had for the card and some extras has been used :(. Perfect timing actually as that means I have to wait and then I can see the X2 and how it performs with having a 8800GTX to play with in the meanwhile. :)

The 8800GTX is a fantastic card, just talked my friend who has one out of upgrading to the 4870 unless he plays a game where he absolutely thinks it's necessary. I would rather have him wait until the 5870 arrives then, with the lower power consumption and all.

Aye I love it. It was a great step up from my 2900Pro as I like to use AA when i can. I was debating the upgrades worthiness as well but after seeing CoD4, Grid and Assassins Creed's FPS made it hard to not want it as I feel as if my GTX doesn't run Assassins Creed as well as I'd like to although it looks great and plays well. It could do with a boost :). With me running a screen capable of 2048x1536 it wouldn't be a great move if I gamed only at that resolution as the Vram would certainly become a factor in some of the games but I'm on a decent CRT so native resolution isn't a factor for me and I'm willing to drop a res or two.

Great advice for your friend. Myself, I will be moving back to ATI through the 4870 most likely as I've been with ATI for the majority of my gaming life although I will use either Nvidia or ATI after G80. The main reason is that the 4800 series is new and I'd like to experience it. It won't cost me a lot either as I should get more than half the money for the 4870 through selling the GTX but I'm happy with my GTX till I can make the move and my gaming is still superb. The 5870 (speculated codename lil' dragon) will be faster, quieter, cooler and less power hungry I'd imagine and will be a cracker of a card. I just don't think I could hold out that long tbh :).

We're all here because we're hardware enthusiasts, just with a varying degree of how much we put into it. Therefore a release like the 4870 is fantastic, and i absolutely understand your reason for upgrading. I hope you have fun with whatever card you pick :D And i just can't wait for a 4870 evolution with a lower power consumption :D
