Anyone with a 48xx and Vista 64?

This is gonna hurt to say cause i got one just yesterday and i have really been looking forward to it, but i'm poised to agree. So far i've been plauged by crashes and my Crysis FPS is significantly DOWN, not up, compared to my old 8800GTS, not too encouraging.
but must be that down to drivers or system issues. most people here have no problems and see a good boost. so it can't be the cards

Well kinda of a mess if they iare naming two sets of drivers the same.Cuase as i have said the hotfix on the ati webbys is for agp only.

It isn't, the cards are fantastic, just the drivers that have been terrible so far.

Would these be newer than the 8.7 though? Seems liks the 8.6 hotfix ones?

have u tryed running it at stock? my 4850 crashs sometimes with an oc above 680/1030. but tbh i don't clock the vram because theres not much different..

I suppose i should just downclock the vram anyway, can't make any difference with the huge bandwidth of GDDR5. But yes it does do this at stock too, i've tried deactivating Aero now and i'll have a go, hopefully it helped. All Aero does is the window switching stuff in Vista anyway? Can't really notice any difference right now, so if it permanently saves me some RAM i'm just gonna leave it off.

I even tried down clocking my 4870 to 700MHz core 850MHz VRAM and it still happened.

And with Aero, Vista renders the whole desktop using the GPU, if you turn it off it increases CPU usage when doing things like dragging windows about as the GPU no longer is used.
With this card i can actually crash the desktop on purpose sometimes if i have enough software open, or drag windows about like mad... seems that anything that uses the GPU can cause these crashes, so even playing a Video could do it....

I'll have a second comp soon, and i'll try this card in that and see if it still happens because i've now tried EVERTHING apart from that. I'm betting it will happen...

i'm going to start sounding like a broken record soon. i've posted in many, many threads about this. :p

how many people have problems with single screens? probably one or two but not many.

as i said before, theses crashes have been happening for dual screen users with ati cards since vista x64 came out. it's nothing whatsoever to do with the 4800 series or recent drivers. it affects all cards across all drivers since 7.x. anybody expecting a fix is wasting their time. i just can't see it coming tbh. it's not even recognised as an issue in any release notes. but google "atikmdag.sys crash ati dual screens vista x64" and you'll it's happening everywhere. even oem machines with the lowest end ati parts are having the exact same issue. for the most part, the crashing happens on the desktop while the card is idle. yet you can play games for hours and have no problems at all.......and then bang it happens.

the only 2 known working solutions.

1) unplug your 2nd screen
2) disable aero

it's something we have to live with for now.

And neither of them work :p Disabling Aero stops it crashing on desktop. But it still happens in games. And would probably happen with Video too, as that's GPU accelerated, and it seems to happen with anything that uses GPU.

Also unplugged second screen and that didnt help.

If it's a universal issue why did it never happen with any of my 3 Nvidia cards?

ATI's Vista drivers are so poor, last time i had an ATI card was the 2900 Pro and that had a massive problem like this too. Basically when it switched from 2D clocks to 3D clocks it would crash. Took ATI over 2 months to fix that problem.
