Swapping PS3 Hard drive ?

Someone on here has modded a PS3 stand to allow him to have a permanent 3.5" HDD in a drive caddy next to the PS3. Think it was a 500gig harddrive.

Why not just buy one of these...

...???

It looks ugly, why buy an external drive when you can just put a massive drive in the console and keep it all neat and tidy.

Out of interest, why are people putting such big drives in? I only have the 40Gb but I can't see my filling that. How can I make the most of my PS3 if I put a big drive in?

Because you can't get 1TB laptop harddrives. :D

In my case when my 160GB is going to 500GB in the near future, it will be used for playTV, the Movie and music store, and sticking a whole load of movies/music and photos on as i cant be bothered to stream!

I bought a 40gb last Sunday and its currently at 16gb left :(
I installed only HALF of Siren and did the installs for MGS4 and Everybody's golf.... the 40gb dissapears remarkably fast when games need an install !!

PlayTV when it comes out. Plus I already store a lot of Music and videos on my PS3.

Download a few of the PSN games as well as installing a few Disc based games and you're well on the way to filling 40GB. (MGS4 takes around 5GB, and GT5P takes even more than that with the latest updates I think).

I'll agree though, an external enclosure wouldn't be my first choice. ;)

ordered a Fijutsu 320gb of the bay hope its a decent choice

This one?

I've got it in my PS3 and it's been fine so far. :)

Fair enough. What movies do you put on there though, do you just rip your DVD collection to your PS3 and watch it all from there then?

Good point, I had forgotten about the game installs!

I was quite interested in PlayTV but I am not keen on having to turn the PS3 on just to watch TV. It doesn't seem right.

I've stuck most my favourites on, the rest I stream over the network. I'm just not keen on having to keep my PC on to watch stuff.

I don't see it as any different to turning on an external freeview/Sky box or a HTPC really.

<phew>....
All done and dusted now.
Not really as easy as the guides and youtube vids made out, but anyone with half a brain should manage.

Firstly, the 40gb PS3's drive caddy goes straight into the PS3 and not sideways.
Secondly, you need to set yourself up with a temporary account before you reformat the new hdd.
Thirdly, you need to reinstall the latest firmware so make sure you have that handy. Then you can restore your normal account.
Ummm.... fourthly, you need to reactivate your PS3 in account management so you can play all the games you've previously downloaded and restored. (I had to do that twice as it didn't work the 1st time)

Other than that, smooth sailing, apart from the 5 tightest screws I have ever encountered and one I almost stripped :)

Still.... I now have a 250gb PS3 so I don't care ;)

right so do i backup on the 40, take it out and connect to pc.
put 320gb in ps3 and format, then connect it to pc also.
then transfer all files from the 40 to the 360
then put 320gb back in ps3 and tell it to restore??

No PCs involved :)

*Backup your PS3 onto a USB stick or drive (Must be FAT32)
*Remove 40gb drive from PS3
*Put 320gb into PS3.
*Reformat and reinstall 2.4.2 firmware
*Put USB stick/drive back in and restore (remember not to restore PS3, you need to go into backup again and choose restore)

Job done :)
