I think my 4870 wants rma with 105degrees VRM.
Just to let everyone know, i uninstalled all the ati drivers and CCC after having similar crashing issues that have been reported in this thread. Then i reinstalled 'just' the display drivers, everything seems to be ok now. No crashing as of yet! i've lost my overclock but at least i have a functioning computer![]()
Get a fan on it, no RAM sinks?.
the 2x driver doesn't work with any other cards..As some of you know i've now got yet ANOTHER card... the 4870X2 (the GTX 260 i had for a mere 2 days is going to my younger brother), and unlike with 4870 it does not have this crashing problem! ... little surprised to be honest. Although it did take 3 goes to get the drivers to even install (ATI seriously need to fire there driver team)
The drivers for the X2 are different from the 8.7 and 8.8 BETA's, so maybe thats why it's working now, or maybe the card is different enough for it not to happen.... atleast so far anwyay, but i've been running it a lot and it's looking good...
Edit: just had an idea, maybe someone could try the X2 drivers with there 4870? see if they work... the'ye not on ATI's site yet, but you can download them from the MSI or HIS website.
As I said, it happens in Vista and XP in exactly the same way. XP doesn't have Aero, so there's no point in me disabling Aero or testing things in either OS when I already know it's not the cause of my problem.
No "display driver stopped responding" messages ever. It either returns to normal after a few seconds with the Powercolor BIOS or completely locks up with the ASUS BIOS.
It's a shame this is happening, because the card would be (mostly) perfect for me otherwise.
It was happening with my Powercolor default clock of 750 MHz, I never overclocked until I flashed the ASUS BIOS, which comes clocked at 815 MHz core by default. The difference is, of course, that Powercolor black screen would return to normal, whilst the ASUS one would not.
I will try downclocking in 50 MHz increments, starting at 700 MHz, and see if it helps.
the 2x driver doesn't work with any other cards..
tbh ati drivers are fine for single screen. i know if people use dual screen then problems start. but in single screen it works perfectly. i've not had one single crash.
