Anyone with a 48xx and Vista 64?

Just to let everyone know, i uninstalled all the ati drivers and CCC after having similar crashing issues that have been reported in this thread. Then i reinstalled 'just' the display drivers, everything seems to be ok now. No crashing as of yet! i've lost my overclock but at least i have a functioning computer :)

are you absolutely sure it wasn't the overclock causing your problems then? :)

Ya

All 3.

As some of you know i've now got yet ANOTHER card... the 4870X2 (the GTX 260 i had for a mere 2 days is going to my younger brother), and unlike with 4870 it does not have this crashing problem! ... little surprised to be honest. Although it did take 3 goes to get the drivers to even install (ATI seriously need to fire there driver team)

The drivers for the X2 are different from the 8.7 and 8.8 BETA's, so maybe thats why it's working now, or maybe the card is different enough for it not to happen.... atleast so far anwyay, but i've been running it a lot and it's looking good...

Edit: just had an idea, maybe someone could try the X2 drivers with there 4870? see if they work... the'ye not on ATI's site yet, but you can download them from the MSI or HIS website.

the 2x driver doesn't work with any other cards..

tbh ati drivers are fine for single screen. i know if people use dual screen then problems start. but in single screen it works perfectly. i've not had one single crash.

I'm not getting GPU has been recovered error messages, I just get a black screen (and the fan ramps up to 100%).

With the default Powercolor BIOS, it used to return to normal a few seconds after a black screen, but ever since I flashed to the ASUS Top BIOS, the screen stays black and I have to restart when it happens. This can happen when I'm sitting on the Windows desktop browsing or in-game.

My card's VRMs can get very hot too; ~100°c when running FurMark, but I don't really play games that cause it to reach that temperature. Both the VRM and Core temperatures stabilize at 60°c when playing WoW, and I have had a black screen crash in WoW. It happens quite rarely (once or twice a day) but is a show-stopper when it does, and is very hard to diagnose.

If the card crashes on the desktop, then I don't really see what the problem could be, temperature-wise. I never had these problems with my GeForce 8800 GT.

This problem occurs for me in both Vista x64 and XP x86 (I'm dual-booting).

@ Undesirable, so in Vista when it did used to recover from the black screen you never saw a "display driver stopped responding" pop up in the bottom right of the task bar?

Try disabling Aero in Vista and see if it happens on desktop. If it does still happen on desktop with no Aero it may not be the same problem, as with other people and me it only happened when the GPU is in use... and does it happen on the desktop in XP? the GPU would not be in use there either...

As I said, it happens in Vista and XP in exactly the same way. XP doesn't have Aero, so there's no point in me disabling Aero or testing things in either OS when I already know it's not the cause of my problem.

No "display driver stopped responding" messages ever. It either returns to normal after a few seconds with the Powercolor BIOS or completely locks up with the ASUS BIOS.

It's a shame this is happening, because the card would be (mostly) perfect for me otherwise.

The only time I have got these black screen errors is when I overclock, 830/1000 I got one in Crymark but 825/975 I was playing TDU for hours without any problem, dont know if it is overclock problem or these drivers with me. All I get is a black screen, I CTRL ALT DEL back to desktop, sometimes crysis has closed compleatly, sometimes its just minimized on the task bar. My fan used to remp up for a second though when I had the hair dryer on it.

Hmmm then maybe it's what i had at first with my 4870X2... Dont know if you have your system overclocked?
With any Nvidia card my overclocked system was 100% stable, with this X2 i have to turn my CPU OC down very slightly by 20-ish MHz and it's completely fine.

Had exactly the same issue as you but only in games.

It was happening with my Powercolor default clock of 750 MHz, I never overclocked until I flashed the ASUS BIOS, which comes clocked at 815 MHz core by default. The difference is, of course, that Powercolor black screen would return to normal, whilst the ASUS one would not.

I will try downclocking in 50 MHz increments, starting at 700 MHz, and see if it helps.

Kind of strange that the problem isn't more obvious (artifacting, instant crashing, etc.) if it is a clock issue, though.

i wonder if these problems have anything to do with powerplay? Because the only stability problems I've ever experienced with my 3850 and 4850 were when I was messing with powerplay settings in the BIOS. Once I get them right they are 100% stable for me.

I meant is your CPU or RAM overclocked? thats what i had to clock down slightly to stop the X2 doing what you have, from 3.81GHz on my quad to 3.79GHz.. Even though a GTX 280 and 260 were fine on the same system @ 3.81GHz, and prime95 and memtest were all stable for hours.

try playing an unreal engined game I was able to make tha machine crash last night playing UT3 demo. (would crash after playing as the desktop loaded not during) Installed the MS hotfix for dual core machines and it has stopped.... well for now :/
