Hi all,

I have about £200 to £250 to spend on a card at the moment. I'm running 1680x1050 though may upgrade to 1900x1200 at some point.

The advantage of the GTX280 is that it has 1GB whereas the 4870 doesn't yet, and I want a card that will last well for the next couple of years.

Thousands of posts on this subject, do a search.
I have an EVGA GTX280 but i only bought it as the 4870x2 wasn't out when i did my build. Perfectly happy with it though.

Tough choice since you can afford both the cards. The GTX280 is somewhat faster than the 4870 and has more memory but as it has been said ATI has better texture compression that Nvidia from what i have read in some articles and posts in these forums. Also 4870 offers DX10.1 support while the GTX280 "only" support DX10.0.
I would get the GTX280 if i was in your place based on the theory that more memory demanding games shall emerge in coming years and the GTX280 might cope better there than the 4870.
What video card do you have now btw?
