Definitely would not buy that NForce 680i motherboard.

Spec a P45 (Asus, Gigabyte) or X38/X48 board instead.

I don't know much about watercooling kit, so just add that yourself. Add OS and Monitor to spec as well if needed. You've already specced a (custom) case, so I've left that out.

Aye, I agree - it's old and has a lot of problems with it [expect a lot of RMA's]
As Chimercal suggested get one of the newer motherboards, if you're getting a 4870X2 I suggest getting a Crossfire supported motherboard.

And I'd dump the Tagan psu as well. Tagan onlyoffer first year parts and labour, years two and three are parts only.

Goggle on yutube for videos of the weird noise they make sometimes when under load.

Google the well known us etailer to do with "new things with yolks and laid by birds" and look at the reviews attached. I lost count how many have failed within first year when I was looking at buying one the other week.

Corsair 1000W is currently the best psu you can buy atm and will give you some room to grow should you add another 4870x2 later.

Apart from tee gfx card this system will be virtually silent.

TBH I wouldn't get 8Gig unless you use rendering or other memory intensive stuff.
The mobo should come with all the cables you need.

The Thermalright would be moe than adequate, in fact, you'd probably get closer to 3.6ghz with a decent fan on it. Just depends whether you want it silent :)

He;'s speced a blue ray player so I'm assuming he will be watching dvd's on it and for 1700 you have to be a nutter not to get silent. Noise computers are annoying as hell.

would that cpu cooler be enough to overclock the cpu to 3.0ghz?
also would http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...per Midi Tower Case - No PSU (Gun Metal Black) be big enough for the components?

That cpu coupled with the noctua fan will easily reach 3.0ghz and more like 3.4-3.6 depending how good the cpu is.

I think that cases is big enough. But you then get rid of all the sound deadening abilities of the NZXT case.

Personally I would have thought if you are spending that much then I'd look at a slightly more expensive quad...

Yeah you could easily fit a better one in the spec.

The Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 would still come under the 1700 limit.

you can save money on that ram and mobo but rest is worth it imo. the 320's in raid will be nice and fast. the mobo and ram from acids would be very good also. that case is very nice and i have some of those fans and evan flat out there near as dammit silent.
