Listened to Fall Out Boys cover of 'Beat it' a few times now. While its not got the magic of the original its a damn good effort in their own style.

What other covers are on par with the original if not better?

Their cover is utterly appalling, and they bottle the solo due to distinct lack of talent.

I've heard a live version of Baker Street by the Foo Fighters, which I really liked it. Not necessarily an amazing cover though.

If you want good covers, listen to the Garage Album by MetallicA, pretty much any of it.

Other than that, War Pigs, a Sabbath song covered by Faith No More. Absolutely awesome.

No, no, no. It's a cover that should never have been released - Beat It was right first time and a remake can't improve on that so there was no point in even trying.

Johnny Cash - Hurt (Nine Inch Nails) is one of the most obvious although Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U (Prince wrote it for The Family) is such that few people even consider the original artist. Oh and Embrace - How Come (Eminem), probably not something that should work but it just does.

All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix.

Dylan said (about the cover):

"It overwhelmed me, really. He had such talent, he could find things inside a song and vigorously develop them. He found things that other people wouldn't think of finding in there. He probably improved upon it by the spaces he was using. I took license with the song from his version, actually, and continue to do it to this day."
