New medal event to these Olympics. The organising body of world Open water swimming did originally want a 25K race, but were pursuaded by FINA to cut it down to 10K to get a better chance of it being accepted by the IOC as an Olympic event. Britain has been strong in the world series with several medals by different swimmers.
Cassie Patten also came second in last years world champs held in Melbourne despite her being stung several times by jellyfish. Kerri Ann Payne was leading that race for most of it before being stung quite badly in the mouth and dropping to 11th at the end.
There were several swimmers who pulled out completely after being stung and loads who finished in tears.
This Olympic race was very easy compared to some events and locations, hence I was expectinmg quite a bit more from our girls.
