Publishers to fine 25,000 game pirates

So the minimum specs on the Crysis box would struggle to run minesweeper..

When it came out, there were 87548254873672541295 threads in this forum alone going on about Crysis performance. Unless you live in a cave and occasionally pop over to Woolies to buy a game, how could you possibly not know that it doesn't run at max settings on a reasonable rig?

How does the games performance justify downloading it illegally?
If your machine can't play it (which it should.. my 3.2 Q6600 and 9600GT can), then sell the game on in the members market. You lost fiver in the process? Oh noes!
So you're defending putting grossly deflated specifications on the box to get more sales then? Yet somehow it's the consumers fault if they believe what's written on the box?

If I bought it and had a system that was covered by the recommended spec on the box and it didn't run properly then I wouldn't sell it on, I'd take it back.

Well, they should, as if they lied then yeah...it's false advertising :)

But to me, recommended spec means playable, a decent framerate...Which it was when I first installed it.

You click on automatic setup, and it sets up the game to your spec. I just tampered with it...Cause I wanted to make it look nicer, like everyone here.

At the end of the day it all comes down to business model, if its wrong the business is wrong.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh

How? Just how?

What do you think a company like Codemasters can change to stop people downloading their games?

Make better games? Piffle.. they download because it's free and easy.
Make cheaper games? They're already pretty darn cheap imo!
Make.. ugh, I can't think of anymore.

It's *not* the fault of the developers that some people like to get software for free!

Head.. hurts.. from banging... on wall..

If I bought it and had a system that was covered by the recommended spec on the box and it didn't run properly then I wouldn't sell it on, I'd take it back.

And that's fine.. In fact that's what *should* happen.
But it doesn't give anyone the right to download it instead of buying it.

nope, as has been mentioned, the vast majority people don't pirate because of politics, prudence, or as some kind of statement against big business - they do it because its free, easy, and riskless. Nothing to do with business model, everything to do with plain old greed.

Its all about business model get that right and the pirates will have little effect on you business. Value and Blizzard have proven this, may I add the game is as much a part of the business model as anything else.

Most games that come out are such rubbish that it makes you want to download them before paying for them. Dont see anyone giving us money back for the poor games that hit the shelves like crysis.

And yes there are demos but that doesnt always give you a good taster of what you are buying.

Maybe extended demos could be an option but then you wouldnt buy the rubbish out there.

Honestly, stop trying to justify what you are doing with **** poor reasoning.

Here it is in plain English: What you consider to be good or bad is completely subjective, you do not have the right to tell a developer that you are going to use their product but not pay for it, regardless of quality.

When you exchange cash for a game you do not get a promise of enjoyment, how would you if fun is a matter of taste? You pay for the right to play the game, it is not your right or duty to decide after using a product whether it is worth money or not.

It is how our society works, if you have a problem with it then go and create your own culture, preferably on a island far far away from here.

Just like every other product in the world you have to use the review or word of mouth system to make your decision on purchases. Just be thankful some devs offer demos. For the games that don't, make an informed decision and if you muck it up, tough. Pass on the word and take your losses.

I know ive wasted a good £60 on games that say good things on covers and are poor. Surely this is false advertising.

Crysis doesnt say on the packet this games is great but there are no computers that can run the coding on it yet so be warned.

False advertising, is this a joke? Developers don't have the right to advertise their game? In your world how does advertising work? You can't expect to see on the cover "This game is alright I guess if you like shooting things, maybe you would prefer one of our competitors games".

By the way, Crysis runs on a wide number of machines. Since when can devs not make graphically impressive, demanding games?

You pirate games because it's free and easy, stop trying to justify.

I dont mean myself. But there are people out there that buy games without checking forums and game sites. I personally wouldnt read about it in a mag as they are too expensive and you cant even browse them to see whats in them any more.

They should clearly label their products like everything else is labeled these days. They dont do this as it would put people off their product, so no its not right that they do this and you are deluded if you think it is.

Personally I think they should put a min, and what is needed to run max on the box. Then you can make an educated guess as to what it plays like.

But this has gone off topic now so ill stop.

Who said I pirate games? I have already stated that I wasted £60 buying them. I am just stating that games companies arent all shiny and pure like you think they are.

in my world all advertising has to be correct otherwise its false advertising. Maybe you should get a grown up to help you understand it before making stupid statements on consumer rights.

Eh, games like HL2 and most of the others on the steam catalogue are freely available on torrent sites. The only ones that are protected from piracy are the online only games like TF2 and WOW as they use server authentication. There is no protection for offline games that hasn't been cracked.

See now, having a MAX settings on the box would help a lot of people, but the reason they don't do that more than likely...Is if the game does not run max on the recommended spec...What will happen ;)

See, they cover they're own behinds sadly.

I agree anyway, we're off topic now :)

I'm all for GOOD games, don't get me wrong, but I don't fancy wasting £100 odd on crap games a year when that can go to much better things.

Q F T, a large majority of people buy games they like, you can test drive a car before you buy it. I dont want to waste £££ on games that are buggy and unfinished and just rushed out the door.

Edit : hmmm hadn't realised Quote For Truth was censored, then I realised what else it might mean.

Exactly. Enough said

Becareful they will be calling you a pirate next with comments like that

I am not taking the pirates side, i am merely making a comment

My apologies. After 8 pages of people spouting crap justifications, I tend to lump people who are against buying certain games with people who pirate.

I should probably take a break from this thread and go smoke :p
