I got home a few hours ago, to be greeted by a horrific smell of gone off stuff. Now, we have a lot of gone off stuff in our house, so I quickly took the bins out and cleared the fridge of everything remotely gone off etc.

Now, I've been googling around, and apparently a gas leak should smell of rotten eggs (that's how they make it smell so you can detect it).

I had several rotten eggs in the fridge, so basically there's no way I can tell.

I also don't have a window in my room, and the windows to the house are minimal at the best.

Nice on a friday night, I think i'm just going to ride it out till morning and see what happens, will make sure my housemate doesnt smoke tonight though.

Do you really want to risk it? How much would it cost to get a bloke out to check it with some kind of instrument?

I have a carbon monoxide detector, which I just checked and it seems to still have battery...hopefully since it's not alarming that's a good thing :/

If it's not going off, then presumably it's working?

You could test it by sticking it near a car exhaust I guess...

Your location seems quite fitting for this thread :p

Phone the 0800 gas leak phone line and ask them, about 5 years ago they couldnt find a leak out a house we rented but didnt charge us.

go to your local 24 hour tesco/asda and get a carbon monoxide detector...... not exactly rocket science

wtf?

If he can smell it that means its mains gas, you cant smell CO thats why we have CO detectors

Do you have anything that runs on gas? cooker etc?

turn it on (don;t light it) and give i a wiff. does it smell like that?

It's a very pungent and recognizable smell.

I'm quite amazed you don't know what gas smells like.

I know what gas smells like, but the whole rotten food smell I've been googling makes me wonder!

I've been trying to phone using my phone, and the place hasn't exploded yet...

If you smell gas or are worried about gas safety, you can call 0800 111 999 at any time, day or night every day of the year. Your call will not cost you anything. Just pick up the phone, dial the number and you will be put through to a trained operator who will take all the details.

Do it now and step away from the internets. Gas is serious.

throw powder over it and look for the wet spot

oh wait.....

thats how to check for something else

*ashamedly slinks away*

Worst *I've learned something dirty this week and want to show hoe manly I am * post ever :/
